Beautiful routine, although this one does not do it justice. Pete suggested "startled", I personnaly would not go that route. No one handles cards like that.
If you want to see a nice routine look at Arnaud Chevriers routine.

I admit that I'm a fan, but my favorite presentation is Ricky Jay's. He uses queens instead of aces and has patter which really matches his onstage personae.

FWIW:
The ending to Mr. John Guastaferro's: "Famous Aces" (2nd. Storm/DVD/Volume #1/2) had me 'STUNNED'! Leader Ace, all by itself & un-g****d, goes into the empty card box. (Box is completely normal) Reveal: All 4 Aces are removed from the box. Watched the presentation 5 x's! (Then, I had to go to the explanation. Couldn't take it anymore/LOL) Folks, you really have to see this. MARVELOUS! Way to go, Mr. "G". Warmest regards, Sixten |

Lewis Ganson outlined Dai Vernon's version of McDonald's $100 Routine in "More Inner Secrets..." (the Harry Stanley version).
I never saw Vernon do it live but I love the printed version and its basically the one I do. I used to chase all the variations too but I do magic for laypeople mostly and don't have the pleasure of hanging out with the hip magic crowd anymore. I also think that this is where the magicians credo TTFM came from - Take The Money! -=tabman

Is the version on you tube written up or published anywhere? I particularly like how the cards are taken from the deck.

As mentioned previously, the youtube clip is based on the one that started it all:
A Dream of Aces by Gary Ouellet. The manuscript teaches you everything you need to know about the effect including handling, music, etc. With this knowledge you can make up your own customized routine. McDonald's Aces and Dream of Aces use essentially the same gimmicks, it is the presentations that set them apart. If you have a dramatic and poetic approach to your magic then learn Dream of Aces. Dream of Aces is best for a formal setting such as a stand up show or stage show as you must have the accompanying music. If you are more of a finger flinger who likes amazing people in a casual way then McDonald's aces would probably be more up your alley. |

Who else does Dream Aces?
Of Course Copperfield made it famous - but does any one do a similar routine with a different story? |

You wanta fool folks, find Alex Elmsley's ATOMIC ACES. A different kind of gaff. Devastating to those that know Mickey D's modus operandi. I think Bro. Hamman has an almost identical version.

I don't know, but Hamman's version should be available and uses same gimmick. I would guess Elmsley's is in one of his two books. You could try http://www.cardsbymartin.com He lists both Hamman and Elmsley's. And ask him about Startled, my favorite McD's Ace handling.

Hi Pete,
"Atomic Aces" I use myself it's a brilliant effect, Brother John Hamman's is "Final Ace Routine". Alex Elmsley thought highly of B.J.Hamman's routine & began to explore other possibilities, resulting in "Atomic Aces". Hi MrMandrake, You can find "Atomic Aces" in "The Collected Works Of Alex Elmsley" Volume One, written by Stephen Minch. Page 217, there are a lot of excellent effects in this books. |

Lovely one, wish I could get a chance to buy it. Local made cards here have the same effect with different name: Jumping Aces.

The original youtube clip is certainly interesting, and he's plainly competent with cards. but as others have alluded, the whole routine feels a bit over handled. and what's with putting the aces face down while the other cards are gathered? that's an unnecessary tip-opp to the genius of this trick, which is that the gimmick aspect is so rarely suspected. last night I watched a superb rendition at the magic castle, and the performer told me that only once in the thousands of times he's done it did someone question the cards. having the four aces face-down while going through a ridiculously flourishy collection of a bunch of cards that supposedly don't matter would seem to be something to avoid. even so, there's plenty of skill to admire in that presentation.
Posted: Mar 2, 2011 12:46pm Pete Biro: "but a way too many turns and moves that didn't really enhance the effect." well said. that crazy upward jolt that goes out of camera range when the key slights are done is like the waist-to-face paddle move that makes a knife routine look silly. the guy I saw do it last night was very compact with the same move; it had the elegance of an asher twist, for instance. |
