Is it me or does this happens to you too. I'm at someone home to watch the game.
And then a mother said " Kids that the magic man. He does trick". So, I have to do a few ticks for the little people which is OK if I was going home soon. But I'm there to watch the game. So for the next three to five hours I'm there I have all of the little people sitting on my lap, on arms of the chair am in. I can't watch the game because not a minute goes by that they want to see a magic trick. I end up baby sitting. I'm I the only one? |

Happens to all of us. Eventually you just have to say no, get lost.
There are a few tactics. One I like to use is 'I've hidden a £27 pound note somewhere in the room. The first person to find it can keep it'. They all go running for a note that doesn't exist, and isn't even made, but it gives me freedom for ten minutes until I start giving them useless clues to get rid of them again. Steve |

You just have to draw the line and not give them reason to think you're going to continue performing. Maybe something like, "I'll show you one trick, but after that I'm watching the game, so watch closely..."
If you keep showing tricks, they'll likely keep begging for more, cut them off so that they don't have any expectations that you'll show them anymore. |

All the above are of the same opinion as I am.
If you want to perform then do so. If not then say no. |

I agree with all the posts above. There are times we just do not want to perform at all and that is the time to say 'No!'.

All you have to say is "sorry, I'm not on the clock right now." and leave at that. They get the idea pretty fast.

I really do my best to not be on 24 hours a day. However, you may never know when someone there would book you for something. My advice, do one quickie and be sure to tell them where to come see you when you are doing it for real. If they beg, just try to explain that today is your day off and you're trying to be a normal person and enjoy the game.

Just as that happens, I would make it very clear to the children (and loud enough for the parents to hear) that you don't mind showing a trick or two, but no more than a few minutes because you would like to relax and watch the game. You can then offer to show them more later if they behave.
It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to make a bathroom/food/drink run when you've finished performing for them to make sure they don't linger around. |

Yes, that is the life of the magician, especially the professional magician. Deal with it.

Considering that you never know where a gig might come from, I always carry a TT and 4 sponges. They take up next to no room in your pocket, and they're really all you need for a quick trick or two. I've gotten several shows booked just because I gave someone 4-5 minutes of my time for free when they asked "Can you show me a trick?"
Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That'll teach you to keep your mouth shut.

That happens to me all the time as well.
Except when I use the "Sorry I don't have anything on me" line, then the hunt begins and everyone is looking for a deck of cards. What irks me more is when someone requests a specific card trick that you NEED a gimmick for, but don't have it on you. |

Each and every situation is different, so go with your gut instinct... It might be worthwhile or it may not be...
Or just learn some Hypnosis and put all of them kids to "Sleep!" (in total body catalepsy) for the next 6 hours!

If we are people of magic surely we can do magic at any time. Ok we might be pretty worn out and need to watch them game and sum up some magic strength. Hay when iam around a friends house watching footy (soccer) I get feed and watered if there kid wants a trick at half time there getting one.
I went to a meeting of magicians once a two things I heard discussed in the bar after was people always want us to perform. The other is where can I find real people to try stuff on. Don't get me wrong it dose wear me down a bit and if me harts not in it its not right. I some times carry things they can take away and play with the swirl disc that makes things bigger and smaller is one. http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/......nny.html Here are a few other things I take out and about for fun as my little curiosity. http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Anamorphic_Kit.html http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Raketti.html
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Vernon said it a long time ago. Make them ask more than once. If you casually let the subject drop you will be surprised at how often it does not come up again. A quick and polite "perhaps later", or something similar, generally suffices. If you are watching a game as you said, you might simply say "after the game" and then remind no one after the game. If it is remembered you can show "a quick one" or beg off once more. Most importantly, if you don't have anything to show don't show anything. Magicians sometimes attempt to work with what they have and if they are not good with impromptu a performance will do more harm that good.

I guess it can be a bit of a hassle sometimes but I do try to take it as a compliment and I also think to myself that I still need the performance time.
