Hell, Woody Guthrie wrote many "protest" songs. "This land is your land" could be considered a "protest" song and it's popular. He wrote many others and so did a lot of other folks. Barry Mcguire is never going to be mistaken for Bob Dylan or Woody Guthrie or Cisco or Sonny or any of those guys. Eve of destruction is a cute song though.
