Hi everyone,
I am new to the whole realm of magic/hypnosis/mentalism effects so I'm never sure what is possible and what is ridiculous newbie thinking. (by new, I have been reading books on mentalism for about 10 weeks). I did graduate work in psychology and I used to hypnotize people for fun and games in college, but what I was doing was slow induction ("I'm tying a balloon to your wrist... now your arm wants to float up.") kind of stuff. I have just ordered "reality is plastic", and I'm looking forward to learning the methods in that book. In the meantime, I have a question that may fall in the "ridiculous newbie" category... so please flame me gently. Can waking hypnotic states be used to convince someone that the card they selected is a different card? I see the effect as going something like this: 1) subject selects a card and shows card to people around. The card is placed on the table directly in front of the subject. 2) use waking hypnotic states/suggestion to convince the subject that the selected card is a different card. 3) do a card switch so the selected card is the one that the subject believes it should be. 4) have the subject show the card again... only now the subject is convinced that the new card is the card that they originally selected... while the other people are positive it isn't. The idea is to then claim that the subject is correct and the Hypnotist did a mass hypnosis. Do effects like this already exist or am I just cracked for even thinking this is in the realm of possibility? Thanks in advance, Jessi Oh... and if I'm going to get flamed, would someone please roll me over every now and then so I get a nice even tan. =) |

Jess, there is no phenomenon possible during hypnosis that does not take place when someone is not hypnotized. This goes both ways. If something is possible while hypnotized, it's also possible while not hypnotized.
There are several effects and even routines which are based on the concept of producing hypnotic phenomena when a person is not hypnotized. One of my favorites, currently, was revealed by Kenton K. Something is written on a pad of paper. It is shown to several people. Then you show it to a person who is supposedly hypnotized and s/he has a negative hallucination and can't see what was on the paper. There is an old effect where a person chooses two cards. It turns out that one is red and the other black. They appear in a totally unexpected place. In fact, the choice is done quickly and the revealed cards are actually the same number but the other suit of the same color (there's much more to it than that, so nobody is going to know when this is being performed). So the answer to your question is yes...and it doesn't even require waking hypnosis to achieve the effect. The great thing about not requiring hypnosis to achieve such effects is that although everyone can be hypnotized, not everyone can be hypnotized by any particular hypnotist. In other words, if you're counting on hypnosis to provide part of the modus operandi of an effect, you're going to fail some percentage of the time. Using hypnosis to entertain involves the culling of potential actors so that only the most active participants remain on the stage. One of two mental effects might enhance a hypnosis show, although they're not needed. But using hypnosis as a means to achieve an effect is risky. That's why people such as Darren Brown have highly edited TV shows. |

Yes Mike, in using a t-p ch--ge this is easy, albeit it has nothing to do with hypnosis. I guess that's why they call you Mike The 'Magic' Dude.
Bob Burns is the creator of The Swan.

Like someone said above: Luke Jermay has a similar effect in his book: 7 deceptions.
Really interesting book by the way and worth it's price. |
