If I were the CREATOR of the glitter string , I would encourage all the manufacturers of balls to use it.

Other than through the photos on the web sites, I've never seen the glitter balls that are being discussed. So I'm not exactly sure what they look like, but in the mid-1970's I had my mother-in-law crochet the balls seen in this photo:
http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc154......BSet.jpg They are a type of glittery (or maybe I should say metallic looking) yarn that was available back then. They also sold balls like this at the Castle of Magic magic shop in downtown Cleveland. I don't know who made them but at that time I bought a set of 4 balls that I still have today. Terry

The Mendoza cup design is based upon a design that Tim Star produced many years ago. He made about 25 sets for John.
Tim has no plans to make any more of them.

Joe Leffler would probably know Terry.
I remember those but cannot recall if they came from New York or Chicago at the time. Made in or about 1974 through 1978 or so. Many shops had those at the time. I do remember seeing them listed in Tannens Magic catalog as metalic thread silver or gold balls for cups and balls workers 1", 7/8", 1/2". I do not have that catalog or I would give out the edition and page number as well. I always felt they were a bit loud for my tastes. When they were new the balls were crunchy...no other way to descibe it. Nice cups. Mobius |

REPRODUCED HERE IN CASE MY POST DISAPPEARS!
Dear All, Here are the facts for the record: I started designing my Deluxe Balls (metallic thread) for commercial use in 2002 in order to introduce with my original Engraved Silver Cups in 2003 and wanted something DIFFERENT and UNIQUE to complement the sparkle of my original Engraved Cups. I can appreciate there are others who have made individual sets for personal use, but these were produced for COMMERCIAL use to complement my cups. I came up with this design independently and never saw this used before, even completely metallic thread balls are much different than the subtle metallic use interwoven within my Deluxe Balls. Unfortunately because of my crochet lady letting me down last minute I was not able to release them in 2003 as expected along with my original Brett Sherwood Cup debut. Nonetheless, I released my Deluxe Balls in early 2004 and later debuted those at both the IBM convention in Cleveland and the SAM convention in St. Louis, prior to rnt2 (see explanation below). The idea for COMMERCIAL selling my Deluxe Balls was original to me as was my ORIGINAL cup design. Pascaline Danis of France says they had the metallic ball design for sale commercially earlier…? It is easy to say anything…I have been waiting a long time to receive legal paper work from Pascaline Danis’s accountant proving this statement, but I doubt this will ever emerge...? You see when someone has a GREAT idea (which I believe both my cups and deluxe balls are or why would they be taken by others?) and invests lots of money into these great ideas and then the idea proves a success, that doesn’t give anyone the right to take those great ideas for themselves. If you think this is OK then you have no personal ethics. James Tong came years later without a comment to me. Here is photographic proof of how and when rnt2 learned about my original concepts… http://s540.photobucket.com/albums/gg353......zill.jpg In the above photo you will see myself (Brett Sherwood) and Mike Brazill at the SAM convention St. Louis July 2004. The above photo is when and where Jake learned about my Deluxe Balls. I met Mike Brazill at this convention. Mike Brazill used to work with Jake at rnt2. After the St. Louis convention Mike Brazill told Jake about my GREAT IDEA (my Deluxe Balls) from the St. Louis convention of 2004 and two/three months later Jake began selling these commercially, calling them 'sparkle or glitter' balls priced at about $38 for four, obviously undercutting my price of $40. I do not know Mike that well, but I've spoken to him a couple times on the phone after St. Louis just to confirm that I was indeed selling my Deluxe Balls (metallic thread) BEFORE Jake and he confirmed by phone and by email (which I still have in my possession) that Jake got the idea for these sparkle balls (now called working balls) from my Deluxe Balls and above is the photographic proof of how when and where this happened. (Notice Mike is wearing a red rnt2 embroidered shirt and I’m wearing the SAM 2004 convention dealer’s badge). Another interesting bit of photographic evidence of rnt2 taking my idea are the below photos. These photographs actually belong to me and are of my hands holding my Deluxe Balls. Jake placed copies of my own photos without my permission on a WWW crochet Meetup Message Board in 2007 SEARCHING and LOOKING in a blatant attempt to locate the EXACT matching threads I use in my Deluxe Balls!! Jake has continually maintained that I took the idea from him. If this is so – why would Jake be searching for matching copies of my thread using my own photos of my hands holding my Deluxe Balls THREE YEARS after the event? Here is the WWW link – please check the link below for yourselves and then copy this page for yourselves. http://crochet.meetup.com/boards/thread/2881263 When I confronted Jake about my Deluxe Balls, he said I took them from him - and then because I took his ball design he then said he would copy my cup design, which he admits here that he did!! Now you know the REAL truth. You are the judge and I have a completely CLEAR CONSCIENCE!! Yours Most Sincerely, Brett Sherwood |

Here’s a section of a product review for some cups paraphernalia from Genii, 1978. I wonder if these are the metallic thread balls Mobious303 mentions? It’s inconclusive but does “The Magic Studio” ring any bells for anyone?
The Magic Studio, 3521 W. Vliet St., Milwaukee, WI 53208. Also available from the same manufacturer are highly polished Chop Cups with two glistening gold balls (one of course is m*********). Price $9.50 By the way, I also uncovered an advert from Herb Morrissey advertising hand-knit multi-colour balls (three bands of bright colours) for Cups and Balls in the late 1960s. Approx. 5 minutes of research went into the above finds. |

Thanks for the good words on my cups, etc., guys.
If you look at my album ot Photobucket you'll see my other sets of cups, balls and boxes. The boxes were all bought at Hobby Lobby. They have a pretty good selection (at times) of unique boxes. Terry

Check the Hobby Lobby web site every Sunday for the following weeks specials. The boxes go on sale half price a every month or more. Also, there is usually a 40% or 50% off coupon is case you do not want to wait for the sale.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

OK, let me ask this question just a little diffrently.
Is it still possible to buy working balls on the RNT2 web site for the monti cups and the La Petite Don Alan cup? What are the sizes? If I wait for delivery, it may be too late to get an order in before the closing. OK! I'm crawling back in my foxhole.... Don

Don, you need to check with RNT2. Only they can answer those questions with certainty. I *think* one of your questions has already been answered on one the the threads in "Ever So Sleightly", but check with them for the full story.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

RE: my earlier post, the Ireland Magic Company were offering the following crocheted ball sets including final loads in 1962; this excerpt from a full page Genii ad: "Set of 4 balls all red and all white and flecked with gold, or all black. Other colours made to order."
Several ads for "bright" three band multi-coloured crochet balls from Morrissey in the late 60s as already stated. I have of course spelled "colour" the proper way! |

Weenieboy;
Hopefully, no one will mention "aluminium" cups any time soon. Oops! Mickey, chessman: I have other, more important requests in to RNT2 on their e-mail. Those have not been answered. I understand they are getting hammered by the weather in addition to everything else. Rather than bug those busy people, I turned the "Magic Café" knowledge base. I still expect it to come through. The word "Custom" I equate with; difficult to arrange, slow and expensive. At least it is when I do custom work. Best to be avoided if possible. Later Y'all Don

What does Gary Animal have to say on the subject? MR

There is certainly a very strong resemblance but I don't know enough about that design and its history to give any further input.
