I am trying to get some feedback on this effect from the Art of Astonishment series. For those who are not familiar with it, Creation is an effect that involves folding a napkin into a flower, then removing the stem and forming a cocoon, and finally, ripping open the cocoon to reveal a live moth.
I have not tried it yet, I just read the technique recently. I am excited to try it and see the reactions from my spectators, but I wanted some advice and feedback from those who have done it. I hope this is the appropriate place to ask this, I mean, it's not a dove or rabbit, but it IS the production of a live creature.

It is an awesome effect. Do it. It is a VERY cumbersome effect to do since you have to capture live moths and transport and keep them alive and then prepare them right before you do it. But, I've got to say. Do it! It is a miracle right before their eyes!

I saw a similar effect on Monkey Magic here in the UK. It was very very impressive. Now I have no idea if it used the same method as in AoA, but I was very surprised when I later came across it in the book.
I'm keen to try this out. Does anyone have any tips on how to catch a moth/mothes and how to care for them? Thanks. |

Moths are attracted to bright lights, leave a window open at night and leave a light on, then maybe (if your lucky) a moth might come in. It's not an ideal effect if you need to do it at a specific time, as catching a moth the night before isn't practical and isn't always possible.

Kevin, I doubt anyone would even attempt to perform this effect impromptu...lol.
Anyone have any concrete advice on how to keep the moths alive and how to transport them to the performance? Would putting them in a pocket be a wise idea? |

Andrew Goldenhersh does something similar with his butterfiles and it RAWKS!!!!! The laymen as well as the magicians go insaine! But he does it barehanded and it is literally real magic before your eyes. He may have some tips on how to keep them alive since they're similar to butterflies. I also have heard that Andrew can do his effect impromptu. Its basically his trademark so I'm not sure how willing he'd be to give out some of these secrets.
