I could use a little help for those working professionals in our group. I would like to drop the day job and focus strictly on my magic. I am a good entertainer. I have great people skills and my magic is not to bad. What do you suggest? Any suggestions on books, vids, outher resources and/or your own wisdom is appreciated.
Thanks, andy |

Well, then, you've got the battle 90 per cent won! It's important that you realize (and apparently you do!) that you have the emphasis and the order right on those two areas. If people like you, it doesn't matter what you do! Best advice I can give: Go for it! You'll never know if you can do it or not unless you try. There is an old saying, the author of which escapes me at the moment: "Imagine what you could accomplish if you knew you could not fail!" |

What area are you trying to get into?
For Children's entertainers, I would go with Eric Pauls's "how to become your area's top entertainer." It is by far the best COMPLETE course out there. It is based on Dave Dee; he also shows you how to put a show together. But just as with any books or videos, you have to put the info into use. http://www.epmagic.com Tell him I sent you (thanks)
Nothing of the same will bring any change, take action today!

Wow, there are plenty of resources out there nowadays... You'll have to determine what markets you want to be in, and take it from there. A few, off hand, would be: Daycare Centers, School Assemblies, Library Shows, Restaurant Magic, Strolling Magic, Birthday Parties, College Shows, Cruise Ships, Trade Shows, Motivational/Educational Magic, Magician's Magician, Fundraising Shows, etc. What markets would you be interested in? Note that the above markets have many tradeoffs: daytime work, nighttime work, weekend work, travel, no travel, gross salary potential, etc. I can help out in the Restaurant Magic marketing. Check out the free restaurant mini course in my "signature block", below. Frank

I am still in the "training" mode. Not ready for serious work yet. My biggest problem is large crowds. I am getting better!
I do agree, sometimes you just have to plunge in and see what happens. I wouldnt get to discouraged at first. Seems like most successful Magicians went through some tough times when they first started out! |

I don't want to sound discouraging but the initial question did not carry enough information. If you have no dependents, a dead end job and money in the bank, go ahead.
There is no indication of how much work you are getting now or what income you make. How old are you? How long have you been performing magic? The comment "my magic is not too bad" does not convey a strong commitment to magic. O.K. you think you are a good entertainer and have "great people skills," but everyone thinks that. Have you the money to carry you over the quiet spells and pay start up costs, insurance, transport, advertising. You need business skills too. I know magic is cool and impresses some girls. But it does need to be thought about carefully. Sorry I didn`t mean it to look so negative. There is only one way to take up magic as a job, and that's to treat it as a job. Work until you are making as much money at magic as at your other job. Until the referrals are coming in and you have to turn work away. Work everywhere and for everybody. Children, Walk-round, stage. Everywhere. There is no short cut. No magic book to read, no DVD. You have to do the same tricks three or four times a day and act as though you are having a good time. That's magic. Eddie |

Try to get your hands on Jim Pace's Restaurant workers handbook.
