Sorry, Lawrence, I was just making a joke. On the other hand, I think limiting AW to being only about a "single fusional represenation of love" is unnecessary. The plot of having two cards fuse into one could conceivably carry the weight of other themes. Or it could just be about two cards sticking together:)

Efforts to imbue The Ambitious Card with meaning and symbolism may work, and may improve the trick (though that's not entirely clear; one of the very best ACRs I've seen is Whit's, and it doesn't rely on any of that), but be that as it may, in the hands of the performer who puts the most POSSIBLE meaning in the Ambitious Card, it's still not going to have the meaning/symbolism/impact that's inherently built into Anniversary Waltz, at least as long as the couple is still together.
I mean, I *like* both effects, but you're seriously going to make the argument that between the two, it's the Ambitious Card that somehow is "more" than just a card trick to the spectator? Entirely backward, IMO.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

My point was not that we have to imbue the ambitious card with meaning and symbolism. I meant that such meaning is inherent with the effect, even when performed poorly. I meant that this is why the trick has been so successful for so long. One of the strength of good symbolism is that it doesn't have to be explicited, it is somehow perceived at a subconscious level.
It seemed to me that the facettes of the Ambitious card were more numerous, but I'm possibly missing some of the facettes in Anniversary Waltz. The depth of meaning in the latter can be opposed to the spread of motivations hidden behind the Ambitious card. But you know what, we are lucky: we can put several meaningful tricks in a single act.

Actually I don't think it's the symbolic or metaphoric potential of Ambitious Card that has made it so popular. I think its popularity comes from the intersection of two things: extremely simple premise, and repetition. On the other hand, the strength of AW comes primarily from the delivery of an impossible object into the hands of two audience members.

Which audience in the right mind would slam the ambitious card due to lack of metaphorical content??....only magicians that have read too many self help books. Belief that the symbology of a card raising to the top is viewed and interpreted on a subconscious is certainly a very jaded view of people.
I have no problem with weaving in clever stories within magic, or using psychology - but to put a motivational speech about the underdog or the submissive raising up into perhaps the most versatile walk around impromptu piece of card magic would not only be ludicrous; It would lose bookings. I love knowledge, I love reading, I love psychology, beliefs, stories, proverbs, myths and much more. But knowing my audiences well, there is a time and a place to discuss these things, and most of the time It should stay away from your routines. Lawrence, I think your too clever for your own good. You see things that arn't there. Reading too deeply into a simple thing can create too much work for the brain. |
