I never had a web-site until recently. My son is a graphic Artist and does many web site for his customers, told me that I should have one even if I have my phone number so clients can contact to me.
I only work for 2 agents, I gave them my picture to put on their web site. Most of my bookings comes from word of mouth and business cards. MagicArtist--- a good show sometimes is not good enough.Something is missing from the way you sell yourself. Tape your show and play it over and over. You'd be surprise at the amount of things you can improve on. Im this business for 50 odd years, and I'm still trying to improve the show. It never ends. TrickyRicky |

What is your web address? I might have some friends in Torinto that I'll pass it on to.

Thanks Donald.
There is more to come. My son is getting his friend to edit and put together video clips. I don't know why I'm doing it. I've done without a web site over the years. How are you doing? I will P/M you later. Rcky |

I have read this whole forum and its all good stuff however I think some of you are missing a HUGE part of what you need to be doing at your shows.
I have a website and get some bookings form people who find me through searches however 95% of my business is through word of mouth. here is the tip. Yes you need a GREAT show but you need to relize that the show is just that a show you really begin to work after the show. this is when you start networking. after the show is when everyone is in their euphoric state and this is where you hand out biz cards and talk with the parents about what else you provide as well as I always do a quick card trick or my illusion of Fusion effect just for the parents. I spend maybe 10 minutes talking some times more. this is wehre they get to "KNOW" you they see the show but they don't know you yet after the show you can relate to them. if you are a parent as I am talk about kids, or talk about other programs you offer. of course advertising is important so don't take what I am saying about word of mouth as the only way I just happend to be fortionate to get most of my biz that way. but I know it stems from my networking and talking to the parents after the show. I do blue golds, bar/bat mitvahs, corporate etc etc all form networking my shows be it a birthday party or the others it works both ways you must network! one other thing I will share. berfore I do my closing effect at a birhtday party, my snow storm routine I anounce that I have biz cards available and my website and mention one or two other types of shows I have then immeadiatly look at the kids and say "I know enough with the commercial you want to see some more magic RIGHT" of course they all scream and laugh and I go into my final routine. following that routine I imeadiatly take a handful of cards and start walking out to the parents and begin my real job - networking. sam

Sam is right, word of mouth is incredibly valuable, but it requires action on your part. You don't need to be pushy or crass.
Donald also hit the nail on the head - word of mouth and spin-off are different things. I get a bunch of referrals using this service http://tinyurl.com/magicrefer and it's incredibly simple. After every show, I include one line in the thank you (a postscript, usually) "May I ask a quick favor of you? If you really enjoyed the show, would you mind taking a moment to tell a friend?" and I direct them to the tell-a-friend form I host on my site. It literally takes 30 seconds for someone to refer you to a few friends using that service. It's quick, simple, and unobtrusive. Looking at my stats, I typically see between 5-10 referral emails going out a week. You would be amazed who people know. |

Simply, word of mouth is the ultimate sign of respect in the industry/ad realm.
First, "It's FREE" - enough said? Second, "It's FREE" - just in case someone missed it the first time. Finally, a word of mouth referral can really be broken down to the individual - if someone doesn't like your performance, are they going to recommend you for anything? Likely not? So your biz message is stopped dead. But the trick, no pun intended, is to really "Brand" yourself to your exact target market. You might put on the best performance of your life - too bad it was to an audience that really won't ever have the need to have you back or "refer" you on to someone else. Really consider your targeted client base, just who do you want as customers? How do you get them "this exact group" talking about you to one-another. Word of Mouth is a bonus though - not something to rely on for consistent work - if you are a good enough magician, then its a huge bonus to have people recommend you to their peers. Always seek other means of advertising to your target market consistantly and effectively.
