Any thoughts on this particular cane? I'm thinking of getting one to replace any Fantasio stuff I may use as I just really dislike the Fantasio canes.
The order page doesn't same, but whats the biggest silk you can use with this cane? Also, is this a type that needs lube? Thanks guys, C

I think a person to ask on the Café' is MagicIan. He knows a lot about canes and cane effects. Nice cane though.

This cane does not need lube. Usually a 15" or 18" 5 momme silk is the largest size you can put inside. I can furnish either.

Well not 'lube' exactly but it is highly recommended to wax your cane using some turtle-wax type car stuff. This is to stop the paint from scratching when you roll it back up. TRUST ME - take their advice and do it - my 1st cane got very scratched up after long use (but, for stage environment they can't see that so its okay, but , you pay $150 for a cane you want to keep it in top condition)
by the way, these are the highest quality canes I have ever seen and I believe all magic-cafe members that have tried them agree. There is no better appearing cane!!! |

One other advantage to this cane over others is that they have a spring release. you can do it one handed. I own several of them as well as many of hte colored ones. absolutely the best cane on the market.
I beleave seo magic carries them and offers a wide range of colors have fun

It does have a spring release but I never trust it. I am old school. I just feel with my fingers to make sure the catch is straight. I had one once that did not go fully straight and ruined the cane.

Sam is right.I own a Mahka Tendo cane and it is the best out there. The spring lock and release is one of the best around and can be done with one hand. It is smooth action and release.

I have no idea who makes the Tendo Canes. I can only say that ever since Tendo's death, SEO Magic from Japan has been "temporarily out of stock" on the item, but still leaves the posting up. And yet, China sites claim that they are selling Tendo Canes. This leads me to believe, and maybe wrongly, that SEO Magic believes that the supplier of the Tendo Canes in Japan will some day make them available. And, that the Tendo Canes advertised by the China companies are imitation or copies. |

William,
I think you are correct. The Tendo canes were the same Harrakhan (sp?) that came from Japan. Mahka's innovation was to use high quality (auto) paints to create brightly colored metal canes. BTW- This technique of painting metal canes was first introduced in print in Mickey Hades' book on Appearing canes. and of course, another precedent: Owen Magic (when it was owned by John Daniel) offered metal vanishing candles that had been painted white.

JNeal,
Yes, I talked with Mahka at length as he was going to make some special canes for me. It was the same factory that made Harrakhan canes. The one thing Mahka admitted to me was that the paint did not work well on the vanishing canes as it chipped. But it worked great on the appearring. I do not believe his widow continued to have the canes made. The original Taylor vanishing candles were painted white. I did not know that Owen's made the painted white canes. Richard

You are correct Richard...Owen only offered Candles.
I too needed a special vanishing cane from Mahka and he was reluctant to take on the project...now I know why! Regards- JNeal

I have a Taylor Vanishing Metal Candle painted white. I have seen several in this area, as I believe the local magic shop sold them. I never knew they existed until I seen them advertised in the Owen Magic Catalog.
I believe some members of the Café in their inquiries are confusing the Tendo Canes for the Harrakhan Canes and Wands. These canes although a bronze color had a special coating on them to keep them looking and working great. The is no need to lubricate these props. Doing so may actually remove the special coating and make the canes useless. As technology advances, so goes the old ways of doing things. About the above comments on applying some kind of lubricant to the specially coated canes. This is not necessary, what you really have to do is keep the canes clean. Dust and dirt particles build up with your oily and sweaty hands. This clings to the surface and slows done the canes. All that is needed is to wipe the canes with a damp cloth, a mild cleaning solution may even help as well, but you must make sure the cane is complete dry before storing. Best in a plastic bag, then sealed or a second plastic bag to act as a vapor area. |

The thing that I don't understand is, why everybody says that the great thing about the Tendo canes is that you can open them one handed. I use a simple appearing metal cane and I open it with one hand only too. So where is the deal ?
Could somebody please explain me, since I seem not to understand the difference correctly. Thank you very much. Oliver. |

One is spring activated and the other is gravity activated, and it does not always drop on it's own, so assistance may be needed.

There have been a few variations of the appearing cane over the years. The release mechanism on a Walsh cane that I have from the 60's is very thin compared to the release mechanism of later appearing canes, and angling the catch a certain way seemed to help in making the cane appear consistently. Of course, the Harrakhan canes didn't have that problem.
As Bill stated, sometimes gravity wasn't sufficient, and the change had to be made two-handed. Then there were the (I think) European-made appearing canes that sometimes opened to a ridiculously long length! Speaking of the appearing cane--John Moehring explained a flashy way to make a silk change to a cane that looked like magic because it seemed that the silk was totally separate from the cane. It was a feature of John's performance on the Ed Sullivan Show. His method was explained in his book _A Texan Trixter_. It's worth a search to find a copy. Check with the used book dealers at the summer conventions. The book also explains John's classic long pour salt routine. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

John Moehring's book is worth the hunt. It is 100% practical workable stuff. Jody Baron has been doing his salt pour for years. And the cane idea is a gem. John is one of the great thinkers in magic that few are fortunate to know intimately as Jody does. He has helped Jody immensely on his Kuphanni show in Maui.
The spring loaded release does help on the canes. But once I had it jam and burr up a cane. Since then I go back to the old gravity method I use on the Walsh canes just for safety. Some Walsh canes had the flat metal catch and others a wire. I am not sure which was the earlier. Usually on the European ( I think they were mainly German) canes, they were so long that they were wobbly. I usually would cut about 6" off the length and they would be better and not wobble as much. Yes Richard, the german canes were generally too long and wobbly. I owned one. If I'm right they're not made anymore, even though the material quality was very good.
