This doesn't really have anything to do with magic, per say, but I find it relevant, and there is no forum for this particular topic, but I was wondering if you guys have hear of Nooma, put out by Rob Bell. If so, what are your opinions on it, perhaps you have some insight to it, or seen a few of the episodes. What do you think about the future of this type of ministry? And do you know of anyone else doing something similiar? Thanks!

Some of them are very good, some are a bit loosey goosey on where he is going with it(saw one and the group I was with had a lot of different ideas on what it was about, now discussion is good, but the presentation was very obscure, and imo wasn't good teaching-can't recall the name of it,something about sunrise or something). They are high quality, and well done. Some of his book stuff stirs the pot a bit. he is quite popular with the 20-30 somethings

From what I've heard taught by Rob Bell and other Emergents, it's not sound Christian teaching at all. They promote universalism. This basically means that everyone goes to heaven regardless of what they believe. While it may sound ok, I would stay as far away from it as possible. Rob Bell has stated that he is looking to start a new reformation on the scale of Luther's. There are many places you can find information about them and how their beliefs are unscriptural.

I own the earlier stuff and it stirs me. I am one that is very picky on what is being taught doctrinally so I listen carefully to his doctrine because I've heard that some of it is shakey. I own 1 - 13, and I've played them for our teens at the church (I'm the senior pastor)I think at least with the dvd's I have, if you do it as a group thing and make sure you reinforce them with solid doctrine, at least the early stuff is good. I haven't seen anything after the one on death, so I can't speak the content of the newer things.

I think most of the theological concerns are in Bell's books, not the Nooma videos. The question is, "Do you promote the books by promoting the videos?"

You're probably right Pastor Holley. I've not seen anything in the videos (may not be as strong as I like) that I could say outright is wrong...very informational, I especially like the one where he gives the history of the young Jewish boys are picked to be trained under the Rabbi. Those who couldn't make it were sent back to learn their father's trade...the best of the best would follow closely the Rabbi. They went where he went...they follow so closely that the dust that came from the Rabbi would cover them....May His dust cover us!
Very good stuff! |

This seems to be a discussion of doctrine; not gospel magic.
I'm told this is not the place to discuss doctrine, so I'll remind everyone else.

It's a discussion about the Nooma videos which some of the topics one could use for Gospel routines, especially about forgiveness and how short of time we have on this earth. But before one uses ideas and thoughts, we want to make sure as Gospel magicians that we are drawing from a good source...
Actually routines based on some of the videos could make for good teen presentations...I might work on putting some routines together based on the videos. :) |

I have thought of using the one on noise(silence) to set the stage for a mime story telling different gospel truths, it is a good teaching on the need to be silent and listen to God, and also the value of just cutting down the noise around us so we can rest, refresh and listen.

That would be good for mime...you could make up signs with the different statements, better yet, if you could come up with a sign that you can just keep turnning over and over with a message on it to read would add a magical element to it too.
Noise really makes you think... |

I have heard the blue man group do something with signs, haven't found a clip of it yet, but the concept is novel in todays noisy world, to be impactful...as you say to magicize the signs would be almost too sweet...hmmm how to do that....
(drat, another idea, I have soooo many half thought thru inspirations, which is not a bad thing, the bad thing is not getting any of them to the performing area yet!):) |

Randy,
Blue Man Group does, in fact do a fantastic routine using signs and if I recall correctly, they do it at two different times in two different ways in the show. They even have a "pre-show" setup which relies on you having to read something flashed across the screen. |

Here's Tony, Is there a link somewhere where I can see that, to get a better idea of the concept? I think it has great possibilities, but I need to see seeds of something in order to grow something from it....
