Did anybody else catch the apparent jump over the Mirage Hotel Volcano?
They kept showing all sorts of shots of this tremendous looking volcano, and cgi clips of what could happen if it went wrong. It appeared, by the camera angles that he was no where near the volcano. It looked like he jumped 20 feet into the air over a bunch of smaller flames and flash pots. Watching the replays, he was on pavement, road, with lines. Who came up with this stunt, Criss Angel? Did anyone else see this?

Are you serious?!?! I was watching the lead up and then had to leave for work. I figured I'd catch it online in the morning. It sounds really riduculous. I kept wondering where they would put these ramps. But I haven't been there since the renovations. Robbie has always appeard to be the real deal. Not faking his way through anything, maybe not so this time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g87lwK01Zc At 1:05, there is no volcano to be seen!
Tell me what you think. I think it is just some clever camera angles. It looked like he was on the sidewalk of the main road. The sign for the hotel was behind the whole setup. Isn't the volcano between the hotel and the sign?

Let's put it this way - the local news stations are covering the 3 New Year's Eve jumps in Vegas, and the Mirage one is the only one they avoid showing.
At the 30 second mark look to the left of the video, and you'll see something with windows - that's the public elevator between the Mirage and the Treasure Island. People every day take it up to the pedestrian bridge that goes directly across the street to the Mirage. They take it up from the SIDEWALK! At about the 49 -50 mark, his motorcycle is going under a street lamp, and (although you can't see it) right past the bus stop plaza with the statues of Siegfried & Roy. See this picture? If the ramp were there when the picture was taken, it would be right from where Robby Knievel's bike goes off the ramp and onto the sidewalk. His bike then passes through the Mirage vehicle exit (where a small blue bridge was placed to keep the ride straight and smooth - smart idea.) Now, if Robby Knievel were to actually jump from some point on the sidewalk and over the actual volcano, he would land right into the glass front doors of the Mirage. At 57 seconds, he's still clearly over the sidewalk, yet past some flames/flashpots that were set up to look like the volcano. WTF?!? That landing ramp comes down on the same sidewalk right about the point where the moving walkways (which are finally actually moving for the first time in 1.5 years) take you into the Mirage. That means those stacks of hay were to prevent him from crashing into the planters in front of the Caesars Palace Forum Shops. Guess what? He took off from the sidewalk in front of the Mirage, and landed on the sidewalk in front of the Mirage. This is the same sidewalk from which people WATCH the volcano show. He may have gone higher than the volcano, but he never went over it. Actually, I'm not surprised he couldn't do it. The Mirage just spent a fortune and the last 8 months preparing an all-new volcano show. If Knievel tried to actually jump over it, and crashed into it, they'd be out a fortune - even for a Vegas casino! |

Youtube is blocked on my computer at work. I'll take a look in the morning and let you know what I think. I don't know much about the new setup. But, the old volcano was pretty close to the sidewalk. You could stand on the sidewalk in front of the little fake lagoon and really feel the head when it went off. AND smell the pina colada scented gas that made it go boom!

The Mirage sign to which you're referring is almost directly to your left, about a block away. Just to make the layout clearer, here's the relevant section of street via Google Maps. Just by the "S" in "Las Vegas Blvd S" at the top of the map, you'll see a pedestrian bridge running east/west. The west side of the street (on your left in the map) is where the jump began. You can see the section of street he crosses before going in front of the volcano. AT the bottom of the map (right about where it says "3424" on the street itself), that's the location of the moving walkway into the Mirage, as well as the start of the Caesars Palace Forum Shops planters. |

BTW, Robbie Maddison performed a great motorcycle jump at the Paris tonight:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b33YSVSrRVo All I know is my stomach probably couldn't handle that take-off, or the second part for that matter. |

OK, I want to know who's idea it was to plan 2 events so similar a block apart.
Knievel's jump was total BS. I was wondering how it could be done because the Volcano sits so far back. But, since they just did a big renovation, maybe they changed the landscape. Nope. Like Scott said, took off from the sidewalk in front of it, landed on the sidewalk in front of it. Matt's right, it looks like something Angel would try. And that other guy, are you EFFING KIDDING ME?!?!!? That's the coolest jump stunt I've ever seen. |

They should have just given the night to Maddison. The Knievel name just took a hit.

From the looks of the feat, it appears that Maddison and the owner of the Paris have been working this stunt out for quite some time.
Further, it appears that the Mirage and Knievel have been working their stunt out ever since they first heard about Maddison's plans to jump. |

Okay...I admit I don't care about motorcycles jumping over anything but I'm confused. Are you hard core jumpers saying that Robbie didn't jump at all and it was faked or are you saying he didn't jump over the mouth of some volcano? Was the distance jumped suitable to clear said volcano had it been done over it? How far do you all usually jump when you are doing your jumps?

Santa,
He didn't jump over the mirage volcano. He jumped over some flash pots in front of it. If you watch the video, and you know the lay out of that area, (I'm sure you do) You'll see that he takes off from a ramp on the sidewalk, and lands on a ramp on the sidewalk. That coupled with the weird cuts, really doesn't look like he jumped over the volcano. |

I don't think he would have even made it over the volcano. The distance seemed a little bit short, and at that height, he would have slammed right into the side of it, which would have been much more entertaining.
Here is what would have happened if it went wrong, had he done what they said he would: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfsGLkhcT0s Here is the jump from another angle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUX5WgPZFFM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sB9hu3iSz2o This is incredible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjbMXRW2h2U&feature=related

Was the distance jumped suitable to clear said volcano had it been done over it? Maybe, maybe not. Let's assume that it was. Why not jump an empty patch somewhere in some desert that's the width of some section of the Grand Canyon, and then claim you've jumped the Grand Canyon? Copperfield once vanished from a safe that was inside a building set up to be imploded, and reappeared outside. Why did he expend so much time and effort? It would've been much easier to just do the vanish and reapperance on stage, and then claim he's done it from inside an imploding building. Quote:
How far do you all usually jump when you are doing your jumps? Ah, yes - "Personal experience trumps everything." I wish I'd thought of this argument last year. I was called for jury duty, and was being considered for the jury in a murder case. I should've just told the judge that, since I've never murdered anyone, I'm unfit to judge whether the accused was a murderer! It's settled then. All motorcycle stunt people should, from now on, only perform for other people who have done motorcycle jumps themselves, as anyone else is unfit to appreciate and/or criticize their work. |

I'll agree with Scott on this one. I'm no "motorcycle stunt person". But I am an entertainer, and a consumer of entertainment. This stunt was tacky and poorly executed.
