A while back (I want to say in the late '80s or early '90s, but I could be wrong), I remember watching a PBS special that featured original (and often surreal) videos to classical music.

The piece I remember most from this was where some people were continually walking up stairs as a metaphor for Russian history (I think). As the history progressed, you'd have scenes of Marx, Lenin, the Russian Revolution, etc. The whole video was filmed on video, and obviously employed chroma-key (or blue screen/green screen SFX or whatever you call it), and was done (again, as I recall) to Ravel's Bolero.

It's possible it might have been an episode of Great Performances.

Does anyone know what the name of this special is? I'd love to see it again, but I don't even know the name of it! If you can video of it online, all the better!

Whoah! That was quick!

I posted this same message on another board, and someone has already given me the answer.

It was from 1990, and was called "The Orchestra", by Zbig Rybczynski. The segment I remembered was called "Stairway to Lenin".
