I used to blow balloons up by mouth but after seeing a good friend get a Hernia (he would sometimes blow 1000+ up in day) I switched to a Filbert Pump.
Occasionally while using the pump I hear people say "That's Cheating!" so I offer to lick it after its inflated and never hear another word from them. Now I have used a pump for years I would never go back to mouth blowing and think it's gross. You only have to do a little homework to find out how many diseases/germs the mouth can carry. If you went to a Café or shop and someone handed you your change or your purchases with their mouth would you take it? Where else would you accept a gift/present etc from someone where it had been in their mouth first? It only that magicians have been doing it for the last 50+ years that way, that people have accepted it, but I feel that will change over time. Another hazard involved with blowing balloons by mouth is what is inside them. I won't name brands but some contain Talc. If you do you research you will see Talc is now believed to be a possible carcinogen similar in structure to asbestos. So if you are breathing a little of this in each day you can imagine the future possible health effects it could have. |

I have to say although passionate in content it is one of the more unusual first posts I've seen, especially considering it doesn't seem to have much to do with this topic. Did you mean to post this somewhere else? |

How plausible does this really sound? Unless your this guy: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn......11409173 Nice ad for the filbert pump though. Doctors often use balloons as a way for patients having difficulty breathing to exercise .... though few have the dedication and sheer strength to blow balloons, I don't think condemning mouth blowers is a good idea. Most hernias develop at weak spots in the abdominal wall. The weakness may be present at birth, or it may develop later in life for a variety of reasons. Any unusual pressure on the abdomen can cause a hernia to develop. Some examples of the causes of hernias are: Heavy lifting Unusually severe coughing Pregnancy Obesity or sudden and excessive weight loss Aging Previous surgical procedures Quote:

It would depend if the cashier had hands or not : ) Some how you didn't find licking the balloon too gross. Germ-a-phobia is the leading reason we have so many tougher germs and strains of germs today. When our bodies don't have to fight off the lesser germs our immunity gets weaker. I saw a study where nose picking is actually good for kids. http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=271 Quote:

You may want to watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz_A2QI9Oes There is NO talc in a balloon, is talc used in the process... yes. As with clown make up, the talc and water solution is use to set the balloon in the curing phase, ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BALLOON. The powder inside is composed of dried latex and a miniscule amount of talc from the dried outside of the balloon. Talc is not purposely injected into the balloon. If you are breathing in while having the balloon up to your lips, to what purpose is that??? I take a breath raise the balloon to my lips then blow. Personally I have been twisting for over 20 years .... my mentor has been doing it for over 60 years. BTW he is still alive and well and probably the healthiest person I know. From: elephant ® 10/07/2003 2:48:12 PM Subject: Talcum Powder and Cancer post id: 585230 From Here http://www2b.abc.net.au/science/k2/stn/a......230.shtm ["In one study it was found that 39 out of 40 talcum tested contained one percent asbestos fibre...........He recommended the use of corn starch, rice starch, flour or white clay instead of talc or asbestos in cosmetics.--APP Talcum powder is produced from talc, a magnesium trisilicate mineral, which in its natural form may contain asbestos, a known human carcinogen. Because of this association with asbestos, all home-use talcum products marketed after about 1973 - baby powders, body powders, facial powders - have been required by law to be asbestos-free. Asbestos can cause lung cancer and mesotheliomas (cancers affecting the lining surfaces of the pleural and peritoneal cavities). ] Sounds to me to be a relatively low percentage. You might want to worry more about what your government puts in your water. BTW if you want to rant use your own post... not someone else's!!

Mark,
Who is your mentor anyway? 60 years in balloons is a very limited amount of individuals. Anyway, just impressed by that length of time.

Mark your post is pretty spot on....
I am sad you did not drop the bomb regarding how there are typically way more germs on hands than mouths...and the fact there are airborne germs; that a simple conversation could spread as many germs as handing someone a balloon you made out with. I hope your lecture went well..... |

And YES my lecture went very well... thank you! Packed the room for both lectures, not all the other classes had that same impact. First lecture was "Bad to the Balloon" based upon my DVDs, entertaining yet informative too. Second was called "You Want Fries With That" Business powerpoint discussion of working restaurants with magic, balloons or facepainting. Are you going to Twist & Shout?
