Hi All
I've just started learning ventriloquism on an old italian book ( author Paolo Michelotto)but found immediately huge difficulties with labial words (P, B; F; M, V) Any hint to overcome this barrier (other than practicing, practicing, practicing....)? thanks/Fabio |

Hi,
The only thing I know "other than practicing, practicing, practicing..." is more practice...more practice...more practice I have been doing vent for 2 years...I still have a problem with those labials But enough practice develops confidence...and with confidence, the act becomes easy to perform Wanlu

Fabio,
I recommend you get Paul Winchell's video. He explains the labials very well and with some practice, they become easier. Tom |

I'd like to second Tom's suggestion...for me, watching an instructional video is a lot better than just reading a book. Not to forget that it's the great Paul Winchell teaching. I watch that video all the time because it is not only a great source of information but very entertaining as well. You get to see the artistry and sense of humour of the great Winch
I'm not saying reading books is not effective...Im just saying its easier to learn from an instructional video. But if you like reading...another great source of info is "Ventriloquism of Today" by Paul Stadelman. I also have to stress that after reading books...watching videos...listening to intructional records etc, we all go back to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...and after that...MORE PRACTICE Wanlu

Grab some DVDs.
Talk Like a Dummy: ABC's of Ventriloquism, DVD On this DVD, you will learn: -Talking without moving your lips -Letter Substitutions -History of Ventriloquism -Dialogue development They give you some guides on how to say those shattering words which cant be used for ventriloquism. I agree with Wanlu. I personally prefer videos to books. I started off with this simple DVD and I found it to be fruitful for me to overcome the P, B; F; M, V barriers.

Videos tend to make themselves easier, as you can SEE and HEAR those hard sounds. With a book it's your best guess..
That said, I started with a book, then got Bill Boley's dvd. Doing some tongue exercises will help a lot as well. The stronger your lips and tongue are the easier it is to keep your mouth from moving, while making the sounds you need with your tongue. Of course, it helps if your puppet practices talking too! We all know Ventriloquism is a two man show. =P

I know there are a lot of courses out there, but I still thank that listening to Jimmy Nelson's record, years and years ago, was a great way to start. It was great having Danny 0'Day and Farfel involved in the lessons!
BUT.....as having been in show biz all my life, I have seen some folks that are "naturals", take to vent like a duck to water, and others, after going through all the courses, and years of practice.....er....um...well you know... ; ) I'm not sure which of these two groups I belong in, darnit. ; ) AC |
