In all seriousness, as for myself, I will say that I do opt for a video over a book. I am not the smartest person I know. I was not a smart student and did not do well in school. I have trouble following instructions and directions from a book. I need to see it and learn from doing.
That doesn't mean that I never read a book. But given the choice, I'd rather see the movie. |

When I rekindled my interest in magic mid way through high school I was living in a lumber town in Northern California with a population of 52 people (last time I counted). We had no television set and a huge library of books. My subscription to Genii Magazine and my magic books that I found at used book stores were all I had.
Later in my magic life my magic purchases were probably 70% books. I got to the point where I was no longer reading any books on how to perform tricks and devoted myself almost entirely to reading books that were theory of showmanship. Currently I spend a good 40%-60% of my working time reading words on a screen or pages. I can't tell you the last time I read a piece of fiction. Reading as recreation is not something I do anymore. I don't find it particularly relaxing and even in my free time I lean in the direction of "how to" in my choices, including the categories of business and personal development. Perhaps BDC encounters more performers who don't read, but his experience doesn't mirror mine. By the same token I don't interact with anywhere near the number of performers that he does. I've been checking in on this thread to see if the other shoe drops, or perhaps a punch line is coming soon. I get the strange feeling that a conversation or incident happened that inspired the original post. |

This thread looks interesting. Is it on DVD (or YouTube)?

Did you notice that someone here on the café is using the same background as you do. Interesting coincidence... but you had to read it to know about it (lol). I meant background of your avatar.

Yeah, why is that magician and his rabbit advertising for "Park Chow" in two Magic Café member's avatars?

"Park Chow" is Cantonese for "Paul is dead".

Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

"Reminds me of a time when I was down south in some red neck diner. I was relaxing reading a book.
The Hillbilly waitress came to ask for my food order. She noticed me reading, then with an exasporated and confused look asked: What chu read'n...for Sums it up, pretty much.?" -- Justin Style Guess being a 'Hillbilly' this rubbed me the wrong way. Not so much for subject matter, but, taking a great comedy bit from a 'not-so-famous' comedian and passing it off as their own. I guess being a well read and well studied 'Hillbilly' I recognize this for what it is. For everyone else's reference, this is one of Bill Hick's best comedy bits from the late 80's/Early 90's. Here is how it should really play out: "I was in Nashville, Tennessee last year. After the show I went to a Waffle House. I'm not proud of it, I was hungry. And I'm alone, I'm eating and I'm reading a book, right? Waitress walks over to me: "<smack smack smack smack> Hey, whatchoo readin' for?" Isn't that the weirdest !@#$%^& question you've ever heard? Not what am I reading, but what am I reading *for*? Well, *********, ya stumped me! Why do I read? Well... hmmm... I dunno... I guess I read for a lot of reasons, and the main one is so I don't end up being a ******** waffle waitress." -- Bill Hicks |

Casey,
Your post is a gem. Kudos to you. One of my big complaints about posting in the Magic Café (see "Food for Thought", Enough is Enough) is false claims by Café members. Plagiarism is big trouble. It is kind of ironic; I believe it was Hicks that complained about being plagiarized by Dennis Leary. |

Funny, when I buy a DVD, I either look for the book or write everything down. I like DVD’s because I get a visual lesson, but being faster, I am not sure. Sometimes there are things in books you miss because you can’t see it. But, in books you can slow it down yes, but you might miss a move that the illustrations can’t show you. Also, on the DVD’s you have to rewind if you miss something. This can take up time, so it’s not always the faster way of learning. I still like books because I can carry it with me and read it anywhere. I have DVD’s I haven’t seen much of because of this lack of convenience. |
