The original post was a beautiful phrase of wisdom. I know 1 or 2 tricks that I'll show anytime, anywhere. But even more that I sit in front of the mirror practicing (or make my fiance endure me do 1 or 2 for laymen point of view, lol). These are the tricks I won't perform for outside people. It's hard to when I do one of said tricks for one of my family really well and one of their friends comes over and I get "Brandon, Show <whomever> that ONE trick!", then I have to explain my dog is sick, the moon isn't alliened with Saturn, so the trick won't work, lol.
I wish some of these people on youtube would live by this be for 'fumbling' around with a deck infront of camara! Make me cringe everytime >.< Brandon |

Don't torture your fiance with stuff you're working on. At first it's cute for the both of you, but I think the last thing you want is for her to grow to hate magic.

My Obsessive Compulsive Disorder won't let me have 8 tricks I do well anywhere, anytime... It MUST be 10 tricks... Seriously...
And from a purely Show Business point of view, it's a great marketing opportunity to perform Magic and pass your Card or number when asked... Great also to relieve the burden from others by being the "ice breaker" at social gatherings, imo... But it does get tedious sometimes, I know... (especially when your mind is on other more important things...) Thanks for the Post, great topic...

Interesting topic, and interesting that it should suddenly appear in this forum.
I do have one minor thing to contribute: I do have, in addition to a deck of cards and a TT in my pocket, a couple of songs that I can and will perform on short notice at parties. I don't know about Bruce Springsteen. I'm not in the same stratosphere as he is. If I were a betting man, however, I'd say he'd be glad to pick up a guitar at a party. If he were here at my house for a few hours, I'd grab my banjo and ask if we could sing John Hardy together, and I bet he'd say..."cool, let's do it!". What magic and music have in common is that they have the potential to be mediums of live, dynamic, human interaction. People aren't asking for something "for free" when they ask to see a trick. They are asking for interaction, for contact, to see something cool from someone in person. I wouldn't be asking Bruce for a free concert; I would be asking him if he would jam with me for a little bit. |
