I'm researching portable lighting packages, easy carry and easy set-up, for use with banquet and corporate shows that take place in hotel ballrooms and similar venues that don't have adequate lighting.
Does anyone have experience with the Chauvet PK1 "Rock 'n Lite" system? Here's a link: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Chauvet-PK1-......66639.gc It seems to me that this might be a good alternative to building a set of "Zaney lights." Feedback and advice from those who have experience in this area would be greatly appreciate. |

I've seen these and I wasn't impressed. The lights are small and don't have much throw distance to them. They would work great for a hobbyist DJ who's trying to create a little bit of stage lighting, but I don't think it would work well for more theatrical lighting.
Chauvet has a newer package on the market that contains 4 LED par cans, a good quality stand and controller. The price is comparable to what you're looking at, but the throw distance of the fixtures is much greater. Also, because these are LED cans, they have minimal power draw. You can daisy chain them all together an plug them into one socket without fear of blowing the breakers. LEDs also don't have any cool down time to worry about when you are tearing down your show. http://www.chauvetlighting.com/led-par-38-system.html The only downside to this kit is the controller, which is sound activated. Again, they did this with DJ's in mind. See if there is any way you can deactivate the sound sensitivity on the controller. Otherwise, you may need to replace it with a different one. Hope that helps. Kent

Donal,
I just found out that this system comes with a convenient footswitch that allows you to turn the lights on, off or go to the music. At our local store, this package sells for $333.00 Canadian. That's what ... about $260.00 USD? So, you'd be paying just over $500.00 for two kits to balance out the stage. For ease of set up, simply keep the cans permanently attached to the T-bar and keep the controller permanently attached to the lighting stand. To set up, all you need to do is set up the stand and plop the T-bar on top of it. Plug the lights into the controller and the controller into the wall. You're ready to go. Total set up time should take about 2 minutes per stand. Now, these fixtures are not DMX controllable and the colors for each fixture are permanently set. But if all you're looking for is a multi-color wash of your performing area, this is definitely a system to consider. Kent

Kent, do you know what kind of throw those LED cans have? Also, my primary goal is simply to provide good all-over illumination on the performing area if the venue doesn't have adequate enough lighting. Do you think the four different colored lights--as opposed to white lights--would do that?
