One of the notables in Circus, but very poorly documented.
Being born myself of mixed parents (My Father was a man and Mother was a woman) In the same area (Newbury Berks UK) As LGS. It was natural that I should show interest in this legend. Many dead ends, much fiction and so little fact surrounds this great showman and his family. Still remembered by his adopted town (Newbury)What with me doing the biz, it became an honour and pleasure that I should be the chosen one to repeat his acts. This I have done on two occasions so far, performing fire-eating and sideshow stunts in the exact same spot as LGS (Market Square, Newbury)Did all those years ago. To cut to the chase,,,,on one such visit (30+ years ago) I was taken aside after the show by a very old, weather beaten woman, who although looking quite unkempt spoke very softly and had the drawl of a very well spoken aristocratic lady. Her words were of great interest, as she seemed to know a great deal about LGS. We met the following day again in the market place (I was doing a TV spot for HTV on the day befores activities) She handed me a parcel, and with the words "You should like this" and " Thanks for your performance in memory" She vanished,,,that was the last time I set eyes on her. Getting back home around 11pm and being knackered from the last three days work and hype, I went straight to bed without giveing the parcel a thought. Next morning,,,all was revealed. I was the owner of a silk printed LGS Royal (Balmoral Castle) Circus poster, dated 17th June 1898. Framed in a high giult frame and signed on the back. So it went on the wall and has been on all the walls since then where ever I have lived. Now and then when time permits I do research into our craft and allied activities, but up till now no acurate records on LGS exist ! The records that do exist just don't tally up ???? Also the internet has little or nothing factual to offer but a hell of a lot of misinformation classed as fact. On another track,,,LGS Posters (Not prints) Are near impossible to trace. My final Port of Call was the NFA (National Fairground Association)Based in Sheffield Uni,,,,they have at last got back to me with ,,,,,,nothing !!! So you Guys and Gals out there,,,where the ***K do I go to from here. His 70yrs book,,,reflects some truth but not all. Ken. |

That's an amazing thing! I've seen reference to LGS in a lot of books, but never anything that had substance.
Assuming that he actually WAS knighted, there must be records somewhere. Perhaps you now have a mission? It'd be a good thing, if someone who actually knows the demands of this business wrote a bio. Assuming that the prices don't get confused with a case of foam balls, you may consider this a pre-order.

Have sourced that he was not a real Lord,,,but the powers that be took his outlandish claims to their hearts and permitted him the use of its station.
Remember, he played to all the heads of State and Royalty for a great number of years. So he was one of them (The Polite set) As they were known then. He took extreme advantage of their generosity which he used to line his own pockets. Sort of like the Malini of the outside shows. Yes he also performed the sponge ball trick..... I do have a few left,,,,first come, first served basis ! Ken. |

Yes, I know of it,,,once more contradictions at work.
The Newbury Police Station is the opposite side of the duel way going through the centre of Newbury. On the other side is the old Town centre and Market Square where LGS did his promo work. The square is basicaly as it was then. |
