May I suggest some products by Royal? They seem to be quite reasonable prices.

The inexpensive stuff is out there. It is just that he wants ALL magic to be inexpensive just for "art" sake or some such silliness.

Here's a link to a nearly-five-years-old Café thread on the subject in question:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=27 I particularly like what Whit Haydn had to say about $1,000 thumb tips. |

Wow! I hadn't stumbled across that thread, Donal. Thanks for the link! That's one of the more interesting discussions I've ever read here on the Café.
As unfortunate as it would have been for me, being a kid who didn't have a magic shop in rural Iowa growing up, I think I agree with Whit's $1000 T.T. idea. Personally, I know I would have dedicated more time to pure sleight of hand as a youngster, instead of being distracted by sparklies for a few years (TTs are like the gateway drugs to props when you're a beginner; at least they were to me). Although I was lucky enough to have a mentor, so eventually the coveted T.T. would have been passed down to me. Okay, I'm done thinking out loud now. Somebody else's turn.

Thanks for the link to that thread Donal.
Most interesting and quite an informative discussion! I only got through part of it (getting late and a early rise tomorrow) and will continue reading the rest tomorrow but it seems to me that pretty well covers it. As I mentioned before, it's all relative as to what one is willing to pay and the thumb tip analogy kind of places it all in perspective. Great thread! ~gaffed~

Michael Finney, in one of his "Live at Lake Tahoe" DVDs by L&L, said that he paid $100 for his first T.T.

No he is not joking. A bartender told him that it would cost him that much to learn the trick. The trick involved the T T. So there ya go.

Wow! He really must have wanted to learn how to do that trick!
Just goes to show you how strong such a simple thing as a T.T. can be even to this day. Great little story and yet another well made point as for the cost of certain magic tricks. Whatever one is willing to pay seems to be the bottom line which is fine by me. If you can't afford it then simply don't buy it. ~gaffed~

It was the first trick he learned - the bartender who worked the shift before him did magic tricks to help get more tips, and Mike would come in early to watch the magic... And the disappearing cigarette trick just blew him away. He didn't go into too many details, but said, to paraphrase, "For the magicians who know how that trick works... I paid $100 for my first thumb tip." And the crowd gasped. But he did make a good point. I forgot what the point was, but it was good.

You're not buying the prop, you're buying the secret.
all magic is WAY WAY WAY underpriced, in my opinion For instance, you can get a dvd that will teach you a bottom deal for $30, but I will teach it to you for $10,000. |
