Stefan Olschewski’s „Key to Your Card“ – Review
By Marc Dibowski O.K., I got this for the special price together with “The Count`s Count”and I really like it! Let me try to explain why. I know Stefan from his contributions for the major magic magazines in Germany such as “magischewelt” and MAGIE and also enjoyed his videotape “Mentalitaeten” that was released only in Germany a couple of years ago. So I was quite interested in what he would come up with internationally. What you get: After ordering the download link appeared in my mailbox only an hour after my order. This is not an instant download but Stefan is really fast sending out orders. It comes as a 16 page PDF manuscript that is well written, easy to understand and nicely layouted (apart from the cover art, there are no pictures included but this isn’t really necessary). After the effect description, there is a short explanation of the basic method, followed by detailed explanations on how to prepare the necessary items and gimmicks (if you can call playing cards a gimmick) and then Stefan goes into the full routine revealing the complete script, some psychological aspects of his wording and actions and several important hints. The final page contains the credits (many of them) and lists recommended literature about the ACAAN effect. Effect: Basically this is the old ACAAN plot adopted for a stage performance. You show a box on the table which is not touched anymore. Two audience members decide on a number and a playing card and a third spec opens the box, finds a deck of cards inside, counts down to the selected number only to reveal the chosen card. This is exactly the effect the audience experiences and, even more surprising, the claims Stefan states in his ad are really true: • No awkward counting or calculating • No stooges • No secret switches • No rough and smooth • No pre-show work • The spectators may change their mind if they like • The lady takes the cards out of the chest • She deals the cards herself • You don’t come near the chest • You never touch the cards!! I was eager to know how Stefan accomplished this effect and the method is VERY clever ideed. Actually this is a combination of pretty old principles and clever scripting and a couple of new ideas. I my opinion, there are only two drawbacks: 1. This is not suitable for close-up work (the box, although unprepared, plays an integral part in the routine) 2. There is some time-consuming preparation involved that requires props for an additional 15-20 dollars. I was lucky enough to already own the most important prop so getting the rest was not too expensive for me. Once assembled, there is nothing that can wear out, practically no reset, you are always ready to go. Overall: I would give this a 9/10 because the effect is great, it plays very well on a stage and even is a riddle to magicians if they do not know the exact workings. It is not a full 10 due to the drawbacks I mentioned before. I would love to see a video demo on this on youtube or on Stefan’s site (http://www.pierrot.tobit.net/shop.htm) to see how he performs the effect, the whole thing reads quite theatrical. For only 10 dollars you will get a nice routine that I am sure will work in the real world. Gonna try this on people during the next couple of weeks. Marc |

Stefan,
I just thought this is one of the most practical, easiest to perform ACAAN versions out there! Yes, it's primarily designed for stage, but with a few modifications and handling change IMHO it can work beautifully in close-ups, too. Once all the materials have been prepared/assembled (which is so easy), the performance is as simple as A-B-C. Thanks, Ony |

Hey Stefan, I've read this through and like it. I've been thinking about how to do a stage suitable ACAAN, and this is great thinking. Good job!!

More precisely: do you need gimmick cards in jumbo size to achieve this?

Hi goldeneye, I PM'd you on this issue...
By the way: it only works if the lady is young, with blond long hair and long legs Stefan |

Hi Ben,
the manuscript is out to you this second! Finding the appropriate spectator is the hardest part of the preparation. That is why I state in the ad that you will need an additonal 15 or 20 bucks to get everything you need ;-) Have fun with The Key to Your Card Stefan |

Thanks Stefan!
I quickly ran through it and there are nice ideas indeed. I may not perform it exactly the way you describe (which is really fine btw), but it gave me a few quite interesting ideas. Best, Ben |

Just an update to those who REALLY want to perform my routine: The German magic dealer Jochen Kellerhof now offers an exclusive supplement set containing EVERYTHING you need (except for the box which is ungimmicked). If you already own "The key to your card" you can start off right away without the need to assemble the necessary decks.
Here is the link: http://www.zauberkellerhof.de/core.php?p......rnCat=50 Best regards Stefan PS: The original manuscript is (of course) still available at http://www.stefanmagie.de/shop.htm and http://www.lybrary.com |
