Bruce Elliot published Charlie Miller's Impromptu cups and ball routine in "Phoenix" and later republished it in one of his trade books. It used coffee cups and balled up dollar bills. Mike Skinner performed this routine for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show.

Neat topic. I recently had the agonizing pleasure of being forced to train this way.

First, most cups have a flat surface when inverted, or else they're pretty useless as cups. Meaning, if the aim is to work impromptu, it'd be pretty rare to not get a flat-bottomed cup from somebody. Second, if we assume the first, so long as it's flat bottomed you can do a lot simply by substituting balls for rolled-up pieces of paper, which wouldn't roll off the top.

I just did Mark Wilson's routine from "The Cyclopedia of Magic" with three "party" cups and four rolled up pieces of paper. It was slow and I was just fooling around at my paint station at Wal*mart when someone stopped and said; "Do that again!" I was at a point where I could start over, so I did the routine up to the 'middle' ball traveling to the one of the other two cups. Then I had to quit.

If this is the case, then the wrapping would not allow for setting the ball on top. I thought it was a very astute observation, one that I had overlooked. If this is not the case, well, I guess I haven't helped much...

I have a importuned cups and ball routine. I did a routine with 3 coffee mugs and rolled up tine foil balls every thing was prepared in front of there eyes as I introduced the trick and its history. I did the trick and people loved it. Also Daryl has a importune chop cup which I have used alot. One thing I will add is practice wand spins with different weighted item and a little practice with a unusual item your be fine. Iam things like wooden spoons and paint brushes and anything long and thin.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Hi Andrew,
This was a restriction that might arise if you used 3 cone shaped object as cups or 3 spherical objects with little or no saddle. many vessels would prevent the charlie miller move, et al, the elevator move, etc. it might be the case that you could do a routine with 3 cylinders. That was all I was thinking.

Right. Ok, so no nesting and no capping. Sequences that can work...
One-cup routines with final loads have been published that don't require a flat top (Daryl, Carney, etc.). Not much difficulty there. If I was on the spot, I'd probably do something like this. Working with only one covering agent also means you've got some flexibility -- structurally, the other night, I was able to work out something with a straw, one(?) rolled-up dollar bill, a friend's hat, and a cellphone. It's just standard stuff: Vanish and penetrate, vanish and teleport, pocket and return, pocket and return, pocket and return (methods on the last three vary), show the final load. You could even throw in a second final load as well. For three cup routines... Final loads shouldn't be a problem, since Dai Vernon's elimination sequence should be fine. The first two phases (0-3-0 and the 1-at-a-time-transpo) in Al Schneider's routine here should work fine. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T4xbc-FOx0) No ideas for an opening bit where three balls vanish one-at-a-time, though, since without having the balls sitting on top of the cup, way too much cup-juggling comes to mind...

My original reason for this line of thinking was when I received my silver/gold engraved sherwood cups and thought it could be nice (for the cups) if my routine didn't require the cups to touch.
My second thought was that the routine should be as close to my standard routine as possible so I could use the same moves and patter as much as possible. no re-inventing the wheel. the no balls on top rule was just me being a jerk. I try to stay in character when possible

If you can get hold of an old L&L pub catalogue where it announced the VHS on the cups and balls by Ammar do it. In those pages Ammar explains a sequence using three coffee cups and cherries. Step by step pics in full color in a free catalogue (at the time). I think it is published in his book but I don't have it handy right now to verify this.
