16. Ham Radio Well, it's more like 200,000 with active licences and almost 700,000 that are licenced.. about 50,000 on the HF band, and the rest are doing EmComm (Emergency Communications). And we're at the low part of the sunspot cycle, activity always slows during this time. Quote:

For those interested our glorious govenor in Nevada, the famous waitress beater Gibson, got a guy on board who thinks it is a swell idea to slaughter our wild horses. If you could have watched the herd cross the highway in front of me the other day and seen that stallion shake his head in glory for getting everyone to stop you'd be a supporter of them. Feel free to email or write out capital in Carson City and tell them that while you may not have wild horses you like them being out here. They are, by the way, healthy animals that have food and water. I don't know the real reason the new environmental guy wants them gone other than the new big houses get visted by them at times and they might poop on a lawn. Fertalizer gooooood.

Me too, de NK1M. I got my license in 1971. When hurricane Bob hit the area, I was one of the volunteers who went to the police station to do net control. There were amateurs at New Hampshire public service company, all the hospitals, and at many public disaster shelters. When police and government communications are overloaded, we're there. And, I got a message from another amateur radio operator that my wife, and her parents, who were 2 and half hours away at Cape Cod, were safe in a shelter. On the cape, the storm picked up some houses, and dropped them across the street! In a situation like that, the Internet isn't available! ..._._
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

De AB2CH - unfortunately no time for that hobby these days. But the license is still good.
