HI guys,I am more to cards, I have got the AOA and it's great given the fact that the ratio of card tricks is 3:1. Still, any close-up/mentalism/impromptu tricks are also great for me. Books are great for me, they can be collected, read over and over again, you can also modify it with your own versions. Well, videos are good too, but I got got some problem with my player, therefore I have decided to invest in books. so given about US200 to spend, I would be glad if some nice souls would give a review on this books that I am considering.
BOOK OF WONDER, VOL 1 & 2 (TOMMY WONDER) WORLDS BEYOND (PAUL CURRY) CAUSE AND EFFECT (PAUL GORDON) SMOKE AND MIRROR (JOHN BANNON) 21ST CENTURY CARD MAGIC (JAMES SWAIN) DESTROYERS (TROY HOOSER) CARDSHARK (DARWIN) STRONG MAGIC (DARWIN) AT THE CARD TABLE (DARWIN) SHAMS AND FANTASIES (DARWIN) AFTERCRAFT (HARTMAN) Finally, what whould I get really?? I am worried that I may get some bad books. Could any guys give me some thoughts... recommend me pls..........THANKS!!! |

Hi
I would say STRONG MAGIC (DARWIN)is a must. But the others depends on your skill level etc. Phillip |

Wonder will make you think about magic and is a better theory/showmanship source than Strong MAgic.Plus there are some fabulous routines in there if you're dedicated enough to make them work for you.
For high caliber card magic you cannot beat Swain's Miracles with Cards and Ortiz's Card Shark. While 21st Century and Scams & Fantasies are good, these books by the same respective authors are superior. I should have added that Carney's Book of Secrets is perhaps your best bet of all. |

I thought Strong Magic and CardShark were out of print. If you know of a place that is still selling it, please kindly let me know. Thanks.

Hi kenllh:
I would definitely recommend you take Paul Gordon's book off your list. Ron Reid |

Strong Magic has no tricks. It's nothing but theory. If that's what you're looking for, great. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a "Must" though. When the book came out there were MANY people who reviewed it who didn't think it was very good at all so it depends on the person and what they're looking for. I'd say the Card College series is a good reference set if you like cards.

"Smoke and Mirrors" is one of the only books that I read from cover to cover as soon as I got it. A year or two later I picked it up and read it again, cover to cover.
The final trick in the book, "Timely Deparature," is absolutely baffling and beautifully put together. It alone is truly "Worth the price of the book."

Smoke and Mirrors and the Books of Wonder-these books also have great theory in them.

Not really a fan of Paul Gorden's works...he takes classics and modifies them without making them much stronger.
Plus says "Do this move "..." and says refer to my other book..." Dave
