Keeping the hands at the right texture and tactile sensitivity is important to sleight of hand magic.
Here's some things I do. I don't like the 'fresh lotion' feel, so I use the "Worker's Relief" hand lotion before bed and after showers only. Otherwise my hands feel too sticky. I think it's important to drink at least a gallon of water daily to keep hydrated from the inside. Since I like to lift weights, I have taken to wearing gloves when I do it. Straps can help when doing pulling motions too.

Great ideas there. I made my own mixture (although I don't claim it to be my own, it is for everybody) of hand cream in which I mixed a mini bottle of purell with a mini bottle of Johnson's baby lotion and I rub a small dab, smaller than the size of a dime, into my palms when I wake up in the morning and it keeps my hands soft yet just perfect to classic palm without much usual efort, and clean and smelling nice all day long and it lasts until around 6 o'clock.

A good salt scrub works to take off the dead skin and a new product that I recently found Chapped Hands Cleanser "Soap Free" No. 140 by C O Bigelow works wonders.....and that an understatement.
The C O Bigelow is found at Bath and Body Works.

I like to use a small amount of cetaphil cream. I use about a nickle size in the morning and at night. You can get a good size of it at costco for about 10 dollars. Also drugstore.com is having a sale on the 16oz sizes, also about 10 dollars which is the size costco sells.

I use this stuff called "Udderly Smooth" and Bert's Bees products. Both can be found at pretty much any drugstore.

For us older guys, let me recommend something called the Homedics Paraffin Bath. I got mine at Bed, Bath and Beyond, but have seen them in Walgreens and a few other places. Nice little unit that holds and melts a special paraffin compound. You stick your hand in several times pulling it out and letting it solidify a bit before sticking it back in until you have a nice layered coat of wax on your hand. It gives deep penetrating heat by holding in the heat from the special paraffin (special in that it has an oil mixed with it and melts at a much lower temperature than paraffin normally melts at. Believe me, you don't want to stick your hand into melted regular paraffin).
Sure loosens up those joints and muscles in your hands that us older guys tend to experience. Makes doing coin work much more pleasurable.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate then hydrate some more plus Neutrogena Hand Cream! Just a little dab'll do ya! I put it on right after washing and drying (about 95% dry). I massage it in well then let it set in before handling coins or cards as it has a bit of tack right after!
I've tried most everything suggested on the forums with the exception of Chamberlain's (sp?) which I've heard nothing but good about! Neutrogena works best for me so far! I've seen the set up Father P suggests but hadn't tried it. The relief for old guy mitts sounds VERY tempting! Mick |

I know you're kidding, but that is true about fires. Camp fires when working the ren faire circuit are terrible to the hands.
My thanks to everybody who is contributing. I think this is a good subject. Quote: On 2009-01-25 20:40, feher wrote:

My most basic advice for caring for your hands is don't fall off a horse, land on one of them, and break it. It takes a long time to heal, and an even longer time to regain your pinky count (or whatever).

Bill,
If you tell a horse story at least use the term "Bucked Off" as opposed to "Fall Off"! Mick |

The bigger problem was that he kept going (which included blasting out from behind the oleander trees and across a street), so I had to take off after him with a left hand that felt, well, broken. Fortunately, about a mile down the trail some friends saw him running along wearing a saddle with nobody in it and caught him for me. |

A great tip:
Don't slip on the ice on the parking lot and sprain the tendons in your thumb! Your thumb will swell to twice it's size and make pretty much every coin move impossible to do for at least 6 weeks...so far...according to my doctor.

Yeah. I was, sadly, forced to give up my dream of underground bare knuckles muay thai kickboxing stardom when I took up sleight of hand.
Correction: The hand cream I use is "O'Keefe's Working Hands."

How many of you get regular manicures? I don't (yet), but I'm thinking the time has come. My hands look like those of an aging longshoreman even though I've never done an honest day's work in my life.
I bought cuticle remover, cuticle lotion, cuticle cutters, hand lotion, etc. What an ordeal. And they still look ragged. It may be time to throw in the towel and visit a professional. Oh...one note about moisturizer. Best to put it on when your hands are warm and damp (after washing them). Most moisturizers don't add moisture, they just help your skin retain it. |

I got one once. I absolutely hated that little wooden pointy stick that they jab into the top of your finger. Never again. It was reminiscent of Chinese bamboo torture.
