I have tended to avoid routines that don't end 100% clean, but I am working on a routine that seems to require it. I always felt like lap ditches were kind of hokey.
How do I get out once I'm in?

Depends on what you do next.
You might drop your empty hands to the lapped coin, stand, gather up the other coins and put them away or move on the the next effect with or without the extra coin.. |

I think Jaz may be right. I think the idea is to get the audience used to you placing your hand or hands in your lap between effects or in the down or relaxed moments of a routine. This is a natural movement any ways and if you do it consistently, then it will look natural at the time when you want to do the "clean up." Just wait for the audience to react and relax yourself and engage them with possibly a question, comment and with eye contact.
