Just what is the etiquette for magicians concerning physical contact with spectators?
Has anyone had a difficult situation after someone was offended by a simple touch such as a tap on the shoulder or (as the title hints) an object was produced from somewhere on a spectator? Thank you, Saxon |

There is a simple and safe way around this:
Always ask first! I would never, ever touch a stranger without prior permission. These days, you just never know what reaction you might get! |

Eugene Burger has a good discussion of this in one of his books. Touch is another way of communicating to your audience. I see no problem with a small or gentle touch to the shoulder (of a sitting spectator) or the hand of a spectator (if they are, for example, holding a coin). If you are a little over the top and aggressive, I suppose, a "touch" could be presumed offensive. I also think this might have something to do with the magician's age and the spectator's age.

Some people are "touchy feely" types and don't mind you being in their space. This is good if you have to use physical contact as misdirection, i.e. closing someone's fist for them, lifting their arm to the 'correct height.' And some others much prefer you perform at a safe distance!
You can learn to judge this from people's reaction. I find the problem is the other way around, i.e. keeping spectators' hands out of my pockets!
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

I think a tap on the shoulder is given to someone I know. If I am in front of a stranger I try to keep a distance. It will depend on how they perceive me.
I start my physical contact by shaking hands. That is a simple touch for an stranger. It it is necessary to touch an spectator to perform your magic, I believe they won't mind. Like in the case of sponge balls or handing them some coins. Mago Mai
