What effects play well for humor? I'm looking for ideas & effects that are strong and also get laughs....or groans.

It isn't the effect, it is the performer and his/her presentation.

Look for effects which have plenty of audience inter-action. This in itself can produce some amusing repartee. My favourites include psychometry, Maximum Involvement and an effect I use involving the audience choice in colours.
However most effects can have an element of humour eg even book tests & with you forcing a 'questionable' or amusing word. Good luck |

I have to agree with Tony, but I also understand that he is looking for types of effects that lend themselves to being funny and gets a good response.
First you really need to define what you’re looking for. Are you looking for a laugh a minute stand up funny or a bit comedic ha ha funny? There are many mentalism effects that do so and many that do not. Yet understand most that are funny are more mental magic effects and should be treated as such. As Tony has stated the performer will have to be able to performer these types of effects in a comedic manner for them to be funny. Let me break down the ones that do so. Effects where you are having the spectator divine a thought from someone ells has a lot of comedy value to it. Thoughts Transmitter 2000 from Magic Enhancer. Another in lines with this old classes is “Hello My Name Is” by Petter McCahon and Barry Mitchell Other effects that play well for mentalism or mental magic are. Cereal Killer In a pigs eye Rocky – The spring puppet can transform into a mind reading raccoon. Joe Karson’s Worlds Fastest Card trick can be re-scripted to be very funny mentalism. Educating Archer DVD has a lot of funny effects, some cross over to magic, mental magic and mentalism. Many book tests are able to be funny some are not. Weather or Not. Mental Frisbee. The tossed out deck can be performed very funny. Red Carpet. Ayres Noetic License has routines that are very funny. Bank Night routines can be scripted very funny. And as said above Maximum Involvement by Tony eye.. This is just to name a few. With that said there are many straight mentalism routines that are funny in nature and can be reworked for a bigger bang. A lot of mentalist performers are very funny in their delivery yet the material is not considered comedic magic. There are many effects that are not funny due to the complexity of the routine and cannot be formulated to get the type of laughter that one would call funny. Yet the performer can put a spin on it to make it a little light hearted. So back to what Tony said, it is the performer, and most importantly what type of performance that you are trying to put together. If it is standup you’re looking for, I would suggest you try and script a few of the magic effects you know now to be as funny as you can make them, and see if it is an experience you enjoy. If not then reworking mentalism will not be your cup of tea. Scripting comedy mentalism or magic requires a whole lot of balance. Do you want the amazement to come from how funny you are or how amazing the effect is. It should be a mix of both but this is not for everyone. Working comedy mentalism takes a lot of work and is something that not everyone wanting to do comedy mentalism can do. Floyd
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

It may not seem it from the video clip (I'm performing in English to a Dutch audience - I had to keep it simple) but I think any one who has performed it will confirm that the scripted routine that comes with my Big Brothers Tawdry Little Sister effect is very strong comedy mentalism.

Doug Segal's Big Brother's Tawdry Little Sister is definately worth a look into and is perfect timing for a UK audience right now to coincide with C4's Celebrity Big Brother currently being aired. AND, it can be repeated with different results!

Definitely those that have the most audience involvement, so in saying this It would have to be a demonstration of Just Chance, Psychometry and Confabulation, of which there are many marketed routines as well as on a number of DVD's.

Banacheck has a manuscript, it's a K-R-Ect meant to play in comedy clubs. I don't know the name of it though.
Also take a look in his PS1 book. In there you'll find Watch It and Watch It Too. It's essentially a 3 envelope banknight with 3 people (yourself and included) and the use of one of their really nice watches. At the end two people are gonna jump on two envelopes SMASHING whatever is inside. Golly gee I hope the specky chose the right one!!! The comedy of course comes out of the situation instead of punchline, punchline, punchline but Banachek has some nice lines in there too. I've always wanted to do it but it never fit what I did. C PS I second Paranormalist, Confab and Psycometry would be great. Give them a reason to give you funny answers and they will. But, during the performance remain surprised by some of their silly answers, if they think you're got off guard like they are by the answer then the revelation at the end will be even more amazing.
