Okay, I'll be sociable and say "hi".
I'm originally from New York, and was a frequent customer of Tannens when I was a kid in the '60s and '70s. In high school and college I even was a paid performer for birthday parties, but I didn't consider myself a professional - I just needed dating money and I thought magic was cool. I made a lot of bad choices buying big, flashy stuff, didn't rehearse enough, and was probably an embarrassment. I did propose to my wife with a magic trick, and that went well! My last performance was for family, about 15 years ago - a 25th wedding anniversary. I didn't use any big stuff because I had gotten rid of it years earlier. I did get it on film, and I guess it wasn't too bad, but that was it for over 15 years. Recently, my younger daughter saw a picture in a photo album of me performing and wondered why I never did magic anymore. That reawakened my interest in magic, and I decided that this time around I'd focus on classic magic. I can afford to take my sweet time learning how to do it right because I don't make my living as a performer. I'm finding it a very rewarding experience. What interests me most: cups and balls rope ring / string color changing knives anything that focuses heavily on misdirection |

Hi Sruli!
Good to have you here. I also lurked a fair bit before I decided to officially join. It's fun to read about your experiences with magic. If you don't mind me asking what trick did you propose with? Welcome back! |

Naturally, she asked to see it again, which I had anticipated. I locked the box again in front of her, put a cloth napkin from the table on top, and put her hand on top of the cloth napkin. Then I vanished the quarter again, and asked her to open the box. Of course, the ring was inside, and as she opened it, I popped the question. She had been wearing a different ring on her finger. She took it off, put on the engagement ring, and locked the old ring in the box. That box sits in a prominent place in my living room display to this day. Thanks for the welcome! |

We liked it.
My cubicle-mate at that time was the victim upon whom I rehearsed. Poor Tom received more marriage proposals that day than he ever dreamed of receiving in a lifetime! By the end of the day the entire department where I worked knew what was happening that night. |

Great story, sruli! I proposed to my wife in Central Park by the Taven on the Green. Should've used magic to present it though- DOH!
I put the ring in a box of animal crackers. Joseph |
