I'm planning on attending this year!

I'm debatin' trying for a spot doin' the open mike.

Anyone here have any experiences with this? I imagine it's a "tough crowd"?

I'm wondering what age is "senior"....?

Regardless of if can get a spot on the open mic, I look forward to attending this year!

Senior is (I believe) over 17.

Open mics are done 2 ways, eitehr general open mike just to get some stage time or the "official" opne mikes in which you get a DVD of your performance and an evaluation from 3 top vents.

Ouch! I'm now a senior citizen if I'm over 17?

Now if I can just find my "dream date", a hot 30 something with blue hair, polident sponsorship, and we can attend a youth rally at the next Matlock convention together.

How many of you here are planning on attending the Venthaven convention?

Are there any Sigfried and Roy figures in the museum so I can at least pretend I'm in Vegas?

I did a lot of music gigs in Vegas during the 80's and early 90's, and have fond memories of some intense times there. ; )

Are there many (any?) B-type vents, working in small venues, clubs, opening type gigs, and the like currently in Vegas? In other words has the Fator deal caused any good stuff in the lower end of the Vegas feeding chain for vents?

Not as of yet. Keep in mind that we see Terry as a Ventriloquist that sings and does impersonations. The powers-that-be in Vegas are marketing him as Danny Gans' replacement at the Mirage. Ventriloquism is at the bottom of the list of his many talents. It might change, but he is "billed" as a singing-impressionist that also uses ventriloquism in his act. The actual quote from their publicity is:
"By combining accomplished singing, spot-on impressions and masterful ventriloquism, Terry's show is as unique as it is fun." I've seen some of his ads that never even mention that he is a Vent.
He is slated for a long run at the Mirage and I'm sure that some of his attraction as a Vent will trickle down to the smaller venues. I mainly do private parties and smaller corporate gigs. I have already had many requests whether I do "what that Fator guy does". I no longer sing in my act, nor do impressions. Specifically, the ventriloquism is not the uniqueness that they are attracted to.

Very interesting...as Artie Johnson would say..(I just lost everyone on this board under 40)

So it still seems vent is a dirty word in the top echelon of show biz...hmmm

I in fact, both sing, and do impressions - not at the level of Terry Fator, and I have indeed been concerned about being considered a C-grade Fator rip-off....but I think as long as my act stayed local, I might be ok, although I might be laughed off the stage at the Venthaven open mic. ; )

I'm currently working on an extended bit, a "classic rock singing act" with two of my figures and I. Will it fly? Time will tell.

One thing though, in show biz, it is not always HOW good you can sing, or HOW good your impressions are, It's the SHOW, and how good people THINK you are. I have been in bands, with singers that were musical wonders, that went no where, and others that were quite successful, that basically sucked. ; )

It's being in the right place, at the right time, in front of the right crowd, in the right receptive mood, and putting on a SHOW is, in my opinion much more important than the actual talent - when you get to a certain level anyway.

Vents now accept Fator, or Dunham have "made it", giving them a lot of lee-way in their current performances. If you expect an act to be great, they usually are.

On the other hand, if you expect an act to suck, it makes it that much harder to pull it off - this being my reasoning why vent is still a 4-letter word to many in the business.

AC I am sure you would not be laughed off the stage at Vent Haven. As bad as some of the open mike performers have been they are never booed but may get some serious criticing afterwards.
