Oh, to answer the question some have asked - the sleight "that many haven't mastered" as mentioned above - is the perfect faro. Yes, that is required for What A M-E-S, if you want to do the entire routine. What A M-E-S is certainly not for the beginner. My book, Personal Collection, is not for the beginner. And interesting, a few have told me that they were "pushed into learning" the perfect faro because of What A M-E-S. Now, not only can they do that strong routine, but so many other effects that they couldn't do before.
Now, I didn't want to do this - try to explain the effect. Those of you who know me, have read my stuff, know that I am not a great believer in explaining the effect first, although I do it often enough. As a matter of fact, I did do it for What A M-E-S. So, for the record, I'll copy my own words right out of the book: (I don't know how to do italics here, so you'll see a couple of words in capitals instead. I've also added a word or two). Quote:
The very basic, 'bare bones,' effect: A card is selected and pocketed by a spectator. The deck is thoroughly shuffled. You deal cards, 'very' haphazardly, into four tabled packets. At the end, you point to one packet and say that you need (say) a three and also a diamond there. And THAT'S the card (3D) in the spectator's pocket! (S)he shows it, you place it on the indicated packet. Then, you show that not only have you dealt exactly thirteen cards into each packet, but that each packet consists of just one card of each value, ace to king! The deck is assembled. You do a face-up table ribbon spread, look at the faces of the cards for a moment as everyone sees that the suits are all mixed. You gather and turn the deck face down and rapidly deal, again seemingly haphazardly, into four tabled packets. You show that you've separated the suits - by memory! Okay, I did it. HL.

Would love to see that trick performed. The effect sounds amazing and I guess it looks even better.

Wow. That sounds great, though I bet words can't quite encompass the entirety of the effect though.

You're both absolutely right - there's really no way to "encompass the entirety of the effect" in words. It's one of the reasons I'm not a great believer it citing the effect first.

As I said much earlier, I've see Harry fry & thrill a room-full of "top" magicians (at Tannens Jubillee about 15 years ago), and I've used it (to similar effect/affect), too. It's not an easy to do routine, but nothing worthwhile is easy...
Those who own the book (on Magic Café) ought to re-read the trick, learn it and try it...It's worth the practice. Paul Gordon |

Thank you for your description Mr. Lorayne. I understand your reasons for not wanting to describe your effects, but for something like this, in a situation where many of us will never have the opportunity to learn it, I appreciate being able to get an idea of what I'm missing
![]() Also, if I'm able to teach something to the master that has already taught me so much I'll take the chance: The little link at the bottom of the page that says "BBcode". The page it links you to will describe the use of bold and italic formatting in your posts. Best regards, -Miles |

Okay, Miles, thanks; I was never told about that, and I'll try it now. Here goes: I will try to bold the word "brown" in the following phrase; How now brown cow." HL.

I had the privilege of seeing Harry himself perform this effect at Bob Karlbach's house several years ago. At the time, I thought it was the finest and most quintessential trick with a deck of cards that I had ever witnessed. And I still believe it to this day. I have never seen a card trick that left me so flabbergasted and amazed. It was truly something to behold watching Harry plow through it at breakneck speed, chattering non-stop along the way with everyone in the room, whilst keeping his mind focused on a memory feat unlike anything I have seen before or since. If there has ever been one trick that was worth the price of the book...this, imho, is it!
It is a memory I will always cherish. And let me warn you, while others might be able to perform this effect with the exact procedure as outlined by Harry, no one (and I mean no one) will be able to perform it with the same speed and casual air that Harry performs it. And throughout the entire effect as I sank deeper and deeper into amazement, I kept reminding myself that Harry was using my deck! And perhaps there are many who will argue that other card tricks are as good or better, but no one can convince there is anything out there that compares to this bombshell with a borrowed deck of cards! Thank you Harry for finally releasing this one! Doug Canning |

Doug: How nice to hear from you and how nice of you to post the above. Thank you. I know how strong the routine is; it's just difficult for me to say so, the way you just did. Again, thanks. Best - HARRY.

Harry:
In reading this thread I have a question: What determined the tricks that went into your various books, many of which seemed to all be your favorites? For example, you published "Personal Secrets" (which I have), "Reputation Makers" (which I have), "My Favorite Card Tricks" (which I have) and "Personal Collection" (which I do not have). Each title suggests that that book contains your personal creme de la creme, but then there is yet another book that has what seems to be your favorites. It's kind of like dating several women and telling each one that she is your only true love! Just interested in your thoughts here. Thanks. Gianni |

Gianni: It was all according to the time - the year, etc. There were, through the years always items that I just didn't want to give away at that particular time. And of course I came up with new, different, stuff as years, time, went by. It all just evolved that way. HL.
