What are some other names commonly used for the spike under the cup? I have heard of "Spike" and "Smash and Stab". I have seen a few awful videos of people screwing this trick up on YouTube. Does anybody know what method they were using when they screwed it up?

It is also called Russian Roulette. Penguin Magic sells a version of it, and even recommend not to perform it. Here is the link: http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=1402

What method they were using? Apparently they weren't using any method!

I have seen these videos as well. All the methods I know all have one flaw.... YOUR MIND. You know where the nail is located and you know you're supposed to smash the other cups but when you are so concentrated on not smashing the one with the nail....well you've seen the videos.

I think they HIGHLY recommend it. The disclaimer is there just to keep from getting sued. Hard to file a lawsuit when the supplier advises you not to buy something.

The best version I've seen of this is called Grab & Stab on the Ten Years of Steve Spill DVD where it's done with knives, the trick fails and the magician is stabbed in the chest, he removes the knife and drinks water, which squirts out of the wound.

That sounds like real magic. I do the Scorpion, which I highly recommend.

Unlike some I do believe that there can be a time and place for effects such as these. I have used them myself in Gospel applications using a theme of trust, but only for older teens and adults.
I do a comedy version of the effect with raw eggs and paper cups and the kids giggle knowing I could get my hands all messy but no danger of anybody getting hurt. This usually follows my silk to egg or egg bag when I ask if they would like to see another "egg-strordinary" trick.
The magic is not in our sleights and illusions, but instead in our ability to bring love and joy.

The Grab & Stab that ladirector mentioned from the 10 Years of Spill DVD is a great trick but it is performance only, no method is given on the DVD.

I think Wayne Dobson had a version of this but without the knife actually sticking in the chest or the water. But it was a russian roulette with knives.

Jimmy Fingers has a version called "Slamdown" that has safety mechanisms built in. It's a download here: http://www.jimmyfingers.com/slamdownpage.htm

If you want to smash and stab, get a Scorpion. Great trick, easy, and audiences love it.

I haven't seen the YouTube performances, but I saw a person perform the trick and screw up on TV (don't remember the show). The screw up was on purpose because he exposed the fake knife and blood on the back of his hand at he end of the trick.

Dan Sperry does the best version. He slides a razor blade into an Oreo and has them mixed up with his back turned and the assistants eyes closed, then instead of slamming his hand on them, he throws them in his mouth and chews them.... It's great! There are videos of this on YouTube... I think it's called Cookie Cutter. Check it out. There's also a couple of vids of people trying to perform it, but they just don't have the style that Sperry has.

I recently bought Instinct by Matthew Mello and absolutely love it.
It can be done on stage, as a street magic trick, or even at a table in a restaurant or banquet environment. Very, very, very happy with this effect! |

Hey Daren, Avi,
Glad to hear you guys are enjoying the effect. I released it around two years ago, and I still perform it to this day. It's perfect for impromptu, and I always do some version of it when there are cups around. Anyone interested can purchase it here... http://www.thementalplayground.com/instinct.html Matt Mello |
