Greetings.
Anyone know any places in or near Tokyo to see card magic or session with other gamblers / magicians? I am a NYer staying in Tokyo for a year for work. I have been to MagicLand, but there must be other spots... any suggestions? Thanks in advance, A. Cravan |

PM, Hideo Kato. He's from Japan and could maybe help you with your search.

Why didn't you ask this question to Satoshi or Mama-san at Magic Land? Sorry I don't know such places. Recently I go only to Magic Theater Roppongi, but it is difficult to watch cardicians as there close-up room is very small. (6 spectators only). Maybe you can reserve close-up room? You can access their site at :

I'm not sure there are the same type of hangouts you'd get in the U.S. When I worked in Japan I didn't really find a satisfactory hangout, but I did hit most of the magic bars. Some phenomenal close-up magicians in Tokyo. I was fooled a number of times with really original routines that I haven't seen before or since. Good luck and post if you are successful.

Thanks for the link Hideo. I didn't ask Mama-san because I thought there would be a communication problem. (I later found out she can speak English)
Althought I try to avoid Roppongi, I will check out the theater there. I have also heard of some magic bars in Ginza? Maybe there are some card people there. Thanks again Hideo. -A. Cravan |

When I lived in Japan (and also when I visit my family), I would hang out at Magic Land on Sunday afternoons. There's a group of magicians that meet up, and grab food at a nearby eatery.
The other thing I would do was go to the magic sections of some of the department stores and meet with the magician on staff. It was interesting because other magicians and hobbyists would come by, especially after school got out. They would see me playing with my cards, and a conversation would start. I would ask them about other magic hangouts, and then they would call their friends, and a meet up would start. And it was interesting, when I was in Japan in January of 2008, I went to the department store that I had frequented 2 years prior, the same guy was there and he remembered me. |

This semester I am taking a course in Gaming Law, and I had a nostalgic card return. Also, I heard about the Clip Shift and also the Steve Forte DVD's, and figured I would check up on them. |

I second that on visiting magic shops in department stores. Also, there is a restaurant called Ninja in Tokyo that has magicians. Some of them do card magic (at least they did last year). They might be able to help you in your quest.

Hi! My name is Eric and I have been living in Japan for more than four years and am a cardician. I know several other magicians as well living here (Japanese and Canadian) but we don't really session, unfortunately. I would enjoy meeting with you! Check your PMs, I will send you my keitai email and regular email.
I live right in the middle of Shinjuku, so can meet pretty much anywhere. Cheers- |
