Having someone whom you can practice with full presentation does make a big difference in the learning process.

Either she will be interested and want to learn magic also, thus giving you a partner to work with, or she will loose ALL interest and not pay any attention to you and will just ignore it. Wait and see...time will tell.

My girlfriend supports what I do 100%, but thinks it's nerdy as hell. LOL (but so true) ;-) I used to show my tricks to my girlfriend, but I guess she became annoyed with it, because recently she started trying to spoil the tricks by turning over cards etc. I guess you have to decide. If she's really interested, get her more involved, if not, keep it away from her as much as possible. |

Thanks for the advise, but I'm afraid it's too late. I don't mind not sharing magic with her though, c.f. professorwhut's comment.

Well, my wife usually does not pay much attention to my magic practice sessions. However, I am ***ed to practise as silently as I can. Hearing the CLANK of the cups, the dropping of the balls and/or wand and the FLAP of the cards she will ignore the sounds only for so long.
On the other hand she likes to watch my rehearsal. The full presentation, that is. And she is a very critical spectator too. Hard to hear the truth sometimes, but necessary. And she prefers not to know the secret if possible. She wants to see true magic, I believe. All in all marriage seems not that bad for magicians... |

I think part of the reason why my girlfriend thinks magic is nerdy is an ignorance that most people who have not experienced much magic share. There's more than a few unfortunate stereotypes about magicians out there; on the other hand, there are a lot of nerdy magicians out there. I love Michael Ammar, but I'm afraid he reminds most lay people of their 8th grade science teacher.
Anyway, I've found that the best way to get my girlfriend to understand and respect what I do is to show her some of the masters in action. A couple of months ago we watched some of the Tommy Wonder videos on youtube, and I think it deepened her appreciation for the work and secrecy necessary to cultivate great skill in magic, and also how powerful good magic can be. She's sort of left me to my own devices since then. |

To battle the nerd image of coin/card magic, show her the Fred Kaps vids on YouTube. Or some Jay Sankay stuff. You're lucky because my girlfriend seems to be immune to the magic virus.

I always say to her: If you wanna see the miracle, never see my secret.

Here here Fred Kaps is awesome. I use my wife as feedback, I make her stand at different angles to see where and when I will be able to perform my tricks, and I help to determine when they are ready to be performed for an audience.

Don't worry about her learning the secrets, my wife gives me the best and most brutally honest feedback I'll ever get. She's improved a lot of my routines with one or two little comments because she can see things from the perspective of a layman and a magician. Honest feedback can be tough to hear, but hearing it is essential.
Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That'll teach you to keep your mouth shut.
