I've had the pleasure of being able to see a review copy of Jack Carpenter's DVD, “An Evening With Jack: The Seattle Sessions - Night One”. It was one of the better DVD's I've seen in a few years and I'd like to tell you why.
Sometimes Cardmen don't come off well on DVD's. I can understand that because I know that performing on video is like working in a void-- even with an audience, the pressures of paying for studio time and knowing that if something goes south, it will cost the producer a chunk of change will often take it's toll on someones performing style. I've seen it happen to some of the legends. Well, Steve Brooks has fixed that with this DVD. The legendary Jack Carpenter was taped in the exact type of environment that he shines in: A Card Session. Now this is a brilliant idea. You get to see Jack in the exact environment that made him a legend: in a session with several of his best friends. I've sessioned with Jack, although he may not remember it-- it was years and years ago at a convention in Sacramento. At that time I was astounded at how polite he was and how much he was willing to share. So when I viewed this DVD, I knew that this was the same Jack Carpenter that handed me my head on a platter in Sacramento. It was the same Jack Carpenter that nailed Paul Chosse a few times. It was the same Jack Carpenter that suckered a room that included Klause, Jennings, Chosse, Bannon, Ehlers, & Skinner. That's the Jack Carpenter I met and that's the one you'll see on this video. The material is substantial, of course. There's a Middle Deal demonstration on there that I'll be using within a few weeks and for the Card Spinner Addicts there's finally a routine that will nail BOTH the flourish crowd AND the non-flourish crowd. But what is the most valuable thing to me though is that after viewing the DVD, you will feel as if you've met the guy. The real guy. You'll get some insight as to how he thinks, how he works and what his real personality is like. And anyone who knows the work of Jack Carpenter knows how valuable that is. I want this DVD to sell. I want it to succeed. Not because I have any financial interest in it, not because I'm associated with it (I'm not), but because I want to see more DVD's like it. I don't just want tricks anymore-- I want to feel like I've met a legend. And that's what this DVD does. It will make you feel like you've met Jack Carpenter. Steven Youell P.S. If by any chance you disagree with me and “just want the tricks”, you STILL won't be disappointed. There is some devastating material here, much of which I'll be using. |

Steven, thanks for the review. I became a big Jack Carpenter fan when A-1 released his two volume video set. He not only has the chops, but comes up with incredible plots!

Steven - thanks for taking the time to watch and review Jack's new DVD, it is very gratifying to hear positive input from someone who loves magic the way that you do.
I've known Jack for many years and can remember when those A-1 tapes were first released. My first impression was that the magic was great but Jack wasn't really being himself - he just didn't look comfortable on camera. That said, when I had the opportunity to shoot a new set of DVDs I knew right away we needed to do something a bit different. Jack and I agreed that a session format would be a great way to showcase his magic and at the same time give the viewer the feeling that they had experienced something really special - to that end I think we have succeeded.

I was excited when I saw this. Now that I have a review from Steven, (one of the guys I trust on here) I'm even more excited. Jack's 2 books and videos hold a very special place on my shelf. I've used his routine Quantum Theory for many years. I'll be picking this up soon.

Hi All,
I was very excited to hear that a new Jack Carpenter DVD was slated to be released. It got even better when I found out how this project would be undertaken. When I heard that the Magic Bakery was producing it, I had to start badgering Steve Brooks to get a pre-release copy. He finally broke and sent me disc one (maybe the fact that I have some compromising pictures had something to do with it) and I just finished watching it. This may well be one of the DVD's that revolutionizes how future DVD's will be shot. The concept of a "session" is great and this project makes the most of it. The material ranges from merely very good to incredible...and most of it is doable by mere mortals. I was not familiar with either Will Conine or Tobias Pashia, but their work and participation are terrific. I look forward to seeing more from both of them. I was already familiar with both Steve's, Dobson and Mayhew. Dobson's work is top class and he is obviously a real worker. Mayhew is one of magic's secret treasures. The man is as funny as can be and his chops are right up there with the best. Look for future projects from both of them. The big surprise was the appearance of underground legend Stephen Hobbs! He not only joins in to talk, but presents a very fine version of RESET that will find it's way into many worker's repertoires. The feel of this DVD is different than most...relaxed, but packed with solid card magic. You feel like you're really in the room with them. The opening, Scarne's Dream is as quick an Ace production as you could hope for and boy is it in your face!. A combo of Blind Lemon Aces and 1234 will also find favor as quick ace productions that can be sprinkled in amongst your personal favorites. Other highlights include an in hands Triumph, a great pseudo Center Deal routine that will fool most and a two card transposition that features Jack's Impulse Change. If you ever wanted to really learn this great move, this is the best explanation ever. I was doing it in five minutes (ok, not well, but I got the action). Steve Mayhew teases us with his Labyrinth Blackjack...great routine and funny as can be...can't wait for his disc. All in all, this is one of the better card magic DVD's to come out in a while and I highly recommend it. Marc DeSouza |

Marc,
Thanks so much for taking the time to post your thoughts on Jack's new release. We work very hard on every project that has the Magic Bakery brand name associated with it and this project was no exception. I am very proud of this DVD and feel it is some of our best work to date.

Unlike some of the above I am not in cahoots with the folks involved with the DVD, thus I am more honest, dang it.....
Title: Jack Carpenter's An Evening With Jack: The Seattle Sessions - Night One Medium: DVD Arena: Close Up Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies At conventions and at casual meeting spots magicians around the world take part in an activity called sessioning. There is a hierarchy in these sessions where the elite will session together while others have there own groups. Let me assure you, it is nice to be invited to session it is not wise to ask to partake. If you have to ask there is usually a reason you are not part of it. Jack Carpenter's An Evening With Jack: The Seattle Sessions - Night One is one of those elite sessions and in this unique DVD you get to look over the shoulders of some excellent magicians as they present, explain, and discuss routines and other magical and non-magical subjects. In this case you have Jack Carpenter, Steve Mayhew, Steve Dobson, William Conine, and Tobias Pashia (a talented and funny guy I met a few years ago). They also have a special drop by guest in the guise of Stephen Hobbs. These fellows discuss various card effects ranging from ace productions to a nice version of Triumph that is completely in the hands. Jack also teaches his impulse change, which looks excellent and I’m still working on. The magic is very good and while the instruction isn’t as detailed as you would expect or hope for on a DVD, if you have some card knowledge you won’t be left behind. The guys taking parts are all good humored and enjoy being together. Over all the whole thing is entertaining and it is interesting to watch as the guys mess with their cards and give their tips on others routines. This is exactly what a lot of sessions are like and, by golly, good luck actually getting in to work with these guys if you happen to cross paths with them. The quality of the DVD is very good, surprisingly good. The cameras used were excellent and considering they had five guys sitting around a table they did a very good job taping what needed to be taped. The sound was fine throughout, bless those that use booms. Though the look of the DVD is one long session the menu does break everything down so you can jump around from chapter to chapter. I am always happy to see it when people get the DVDs made right and this one was really well done in a not so easy to tape environment. I liked this DVD and the material was really interesting. I am going to work on the Impulse Change because I need a good visual change. If you like card magic and want to hear a group of talented guys discuss the art then you may want to check out this DVD. Very well done. |

Excellent. Is this all cards or do they get into coins at all? I hope Tobias gets more time, he really is an outstanding young man and I think he deserves a lil' spot light.

Yes, you'll see Tobias doing more stuff.
MagicSanta asked; "Is this all cards or do they get into coins at all?" Well you know Jack, It's all about the cards. You'll also be happy to know that one of our future releases will be a DVD featuring nothing but magic from Tobias! Yep, Tobias has his very own DVD in the works so that is certainly something you'll no doubt have an interest in.

I got my DVD yesterday (thanks Steve), I had been anxiously waiting for this to be released ever since Steve first told me about the project.
I really enjoyed the DVD, I felt like a fly on the wall watching some great card guys just having fun & sharing with each other. The material is outstanding, watching Jack was a real pleasure. Everything is explained very clearly & it was great to see the interaction between all the guys, sharing tips, subtleties and an occasional flub. Once again, the material taught here is excellent. I would suggest watching it the first time without cards in hand, just enjoy it. Watch it a second time and go through the effects with cards in hand, you will have a lot of fun. If you like solid, elegant card magic, this DVD is for you. I am anxiously awaiting the second volume (Night Two), I know it will be just as good as this one. Mike |
