With greatest respect to all,
I'm just wondering out loud if the era of the Buddha Cup might have come and gone. Has the age of political correctness and the heightened awareness of the racial, ethnic, religious, spiritual and cultural sensitivities of others perhaps made the Buddaha Chop Cup a prop best left for collectors? I don't know but, if a Jesus Chop Cup or a Mohammed Chop Cup appeared, I suspect that there would be he** to pay. A person never knows whom might be in his audience and/or whom a performer might unintentionally disprespect or offend by the use of such prop. Perhaps in these turbulent times, the magic suppliers and dealers are taking a pragmatic and prudent course of action by not making or selling such items at the present time. I don't know, maybe not. Just thinking out loud. With greatest respect, Mike P.S. Quote:

According to Wikipedia, the largest religion in Singapore is Buddhism, with 42.5% ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Singapore ). I've got to rethink my above post.

It all depends on how you use it. If your routine is presented with respect and dignity, it should not offend anyone. If it is presented in a deprecating manner, it should offend EVERYONE.
Sometimes, though, people will carry things a bit too far. During the late 1970's there was a restaurant in Houston called "The Happy Buddha." It was basically a knockoff of the Benihana style of restaurant. As you entered the restaurant, there was a rather large statue of Hotei, who is also sometimes called "The Laughing Buddha." Some members of the Buddhist community took offense at the name of the restaurant and asked how Christians would feel if they opened a restaurant called "The Jolly Jesus." The owners of the restaurant figured that they had been put up to it by the people who had opened a Benihana of Tokyo franchise downtown. They did not change the name of the restaurant.

I wouldnt worry too much about offense. Whatever someone does - someone, somewhere can evoke offense if they are so inclined.
From my experience Buddhism is not like the obsessive and dogmatic forms of Abrahamic Monotheisms and as such isn't as keen to find offense. As Singapore is a highly developed and educated nation - most (far more than would say so in a wiki questionnaire!) are atheist, plus Buddhism is more a way of thinking than a religion (it should go without saying That belief in the supernatural and true education are opposed) I don't think they would be offended as much as surprised and interested to see a part of their distant cultural heritage used in a trick. I introduced it as a "re-enactment" of an 1000 year old Chinese trick- (keep them from think about magnets!) of course now I wonder if a few did find mild offense - oh well....... let me know if you need one- but I'm sure you can get one state side. my only "beef" with it is the shoddy balls it came with |

I could see using this as a prop in a story about the progress a person made trying to find true happiness. The balls could be replaced with bags of treasure. A thief could try to make off with the treasure, yet it always comes back to the monastery. Finally, the thief, realizing his mistake comes back to the monastery to confess, and finds happiness (represented by the Buddha.)

A monk was sitting in a tea house a long time ago.
He had finished his tea and was left with these little silk tea bags. He decided to play a game and as he played he learned that the bags and the cup could do magic though, many of the patrons in the tea house that day would say it was the Monk that had the magic. Would you like to see what the Monk did at his little table on that day so long ago? That is how I start the routine...How does that begining sound? To me the props lend themselves to many many story possibilites and my imagination gets a good work out. Mobius |

MY GUESS is they had a batch made (or found a quantity, got them all) and sales were not that brisk so they probably just didn't feel like making any more of them.

I think the operative term is something like half a container load. These things barely moved for the first couple of years. Then they disappeared. Check the big auction site.

I was at Fantasma in NYC last month and asked about the Buddha's and "Magic" (guy who works there) said people are calling constantly about them but that they will no longer be made even though the demand is very high.............

I wasn't too jazzed about the design and the ad made it look like it was just an odd looking cup that came with a little Buddha statue as a final load. Big deal. When I stopped by Fantasma a few years ago while on vacation in New York and saw how the cup and load really worked and what you could do with it I immediately scooped one up. I'm sure once someone over at Majic Fake. . .er Makers finds out there is a demand for this prop they'll have a knock off available in no time.

Hey, they've got Brett Sherwood cups (silver engraved) for just $3,500!
But is does say, "4-6 week lead time. Call for availability." There's a hefty profit for you! Says they are made by "B.S." Guess if they knew the name, a customer might discover a better price elsewhere? Wonder if anyone has 'taken advantage' of the Buddha Chop Cup sale price of $1,600?
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Hmmm, I wonder why there is a 4-6 week lead time
I think Buddha would have to teach me it personally before I pay that for it |
