I wonder if anyone used owls in their act and if so are they easy to managed?

I believe they are illegal to own here in the United States. I was in Parrots of the world in NY and the owner, who has an animal show on cable, has a license to own them. He has one or two in the store but they are definitely NOT for sale.

I saw one for sale here in my part of the world and I've never seen them used in a magic show. I wonder if they are easy to handle?

Owls are not illgal to own in the USA. However they require a license to own. Owning an owl falls under the "Falconry" regulations.
In which case you have to have the proper Federal and State permits which require a two year apprenticeship under another falconer of a higher class (general or master) before you may take on an owl. Most states will only allow the Great Horned Owls for falconry. They are a hunting animal (a raptor) and there is a requirement to take them out and let them hunt. The hutch/environment is regularly checked for suitability for the animals. Owls are NOT pets! They are natural predators (hunters) and should not be treated as pets. There is a lot of responsibility when it comes to having a raptor. I suggest, if you are interested in raptors check to see if you have a state falconry club and speak with some of the members. Falconry is allowed in every state other then Hawaii and most states have a state club. Frankly, you don't own an owl it owns you! Unless you are really into the bird as a breed you'll find that they are more trouble than they are worth.

Thank Harry for that important bit of information.
No wonder people do not use owls!

Even without Harry's information, I think a little common sense needs to be used when considering using animals. It's great to be creative and think outside of the box but some things just defy logic. No one uses penguins, herons, eagles, pelicans, flamingos, ostrich's or Emu's either but would you really want to? Think about it.

I like the bird General Grant uses. I forgot the type of bird it is. It looks almost like an owl.

I remember a magician out this way by the name of Leopold that had produced and owl out of a Square Circle of all things. This was on WGN's Bozo show .. probably 20 years ago.
Believe it or not .. I was looking into using bats in my act way back when. Of course it was a very good idea .. so I went with snakes instead. Go figure .. Steve |

Dynamike, the bird that General Grant uses is a Portugese Pigeon.

I have talked to General Grant many times about this. If your talking about the big white bird he uses for his last production, that's a "Giant Runt" - the largest breed of pigeon. I tried to find some locally but had no luck. I went with big white fantail pigeons instead, which are almost as big.
Maybe Portugese pigeon and giant runt are the same thing? Not sure, in any case, it's a great end production item after a bunch of doves. Steven |

Steven, yes they are the same thing. Early on, Gen always referred to it as a portuges pigeon. The one he has now is his second one

S&R did a production of flamingos in an old show. They also used a falcon I believe.
As a circus fan I might ad that there are acts here in Europe with ostrichs. A guy called Krenzola Jr. has a voulture in his animal act, my fiend Steve Pedersen has a groupe of penguins in his sealion act.

Guess my point was missed. I wasn't clear. I simply meant that we get quite a few topics here asking if such and such an animal can be used. The answer is almost the same each time. Yes, you can use just about any animal you wish but you have to be willing to put up with their individual traits.
At some point in time, probably just about every animal you can think of has been used in an act. Those that have not been used will most likely be a topic of convesation here at one point or another.
