I've had an Idea for an opening of a show. A soggy cardboard box falls from the rafters hitting the floor with a splodge and a slight crumple. A Pause... then I break out of it looking slightly dazed! I don't want to use black art and the stage should be empty! Maybe I should actually be in the box and think about building a cage that will protect me! What do you recommend?

Jasper, sounds like you need a ramp from the back or a trap in the floor...... Doesn't sound doable.
How about having a table on the stage and drop a dummy dressed like you behind the table you are hiding behind... you jump up and say you are glad to have "dropped" in. Bryan
Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.

Don't get dropped in the box, that just seems like a way to close your act for good. I know you want an empty stage, but how about a break away table with a small table cloth and a hole in the top. That way a bottomless box could fall from the rafters, smash the table flat and load you inside.
On the Roadrunner cartoons, after something falls there's always a little trickle of some debris. If you plan on loading after the fall, you might have some sand and some slips of paper cascade from the spot the box fell. I'm sure most people would glance up to see what else might fall next. -Josh

Jasper,
I like it. Please tell me where to buy soggy cardboard boxes. Sid

Actually, the idea is very do-able. Done correctly, it could be done without a stage trap, BA & all that. I just don't think it would be a strong opener. Maybe for after intermission, or the beginning to a longer segment.

I like the breakaway table idea to load me inside and the rubble idea, I think this could be very effective or at least very funny! I also agree about using it after an intermission, what a great mid show surprise! Thanks for your ideas guys.

Sylvester the Jester does something similar but in reverse. At the end of his act a safe falls on his head and flattens him out.

Definitely an interesting picture, but I fear that if you put a cage in the box you will not get the "splodge" sound, but rather a "clang/crash" followed by your voice saying, "ow. ohhhh. help me."
