I never have been very impressed with Twilight Angels. I guess it is ok but nothing that seems all that special to me so I have not put any effort into doing it. The Ultragaff deck by Garcia and Houchin have lots of effects like it. Switch in a gaff card, smear it or move the angels to one corner one at a time, etc. Not really that mind blowing IMO. I think the average persons response to those types of effects is "Cool, where did buy that special card from?" Plus in this effect, since you have them sign the card, you have to keep getting more gaff cards.

But if it works for you guys than that is all that matters.

Anyone here listen to the live chat with Paul yesterday? Really great. He talked for almost an hour and a half. And, he answered the following questions:

What three tricks would you do at an informal social gathering?

Answer: I would probably perform just one thing - Twilight Angels.

What are your favorite tricks on TA?

Answer: All of the tricks on TA are there for one reason or another, but I especially like Twilight Angels, The Big Tiny, Water Trap, Dr. Fun, and Angel Cake.

I missed it, unfortunately. But I am looking forward to catching the replay when that happens.

I think it depends on your presentation and a lot of factors. Also if you don't overdo it with these types of effects with lots of gaffs. Twilight angels gives a reason, and is not just a show of skill. And using a mirror immage...it is just a moment of astonisment for the right spectators. After all, it is the one Paul does, and after doing it myself, I can see why.

The mirror vanish is a startling vanish of the angel and catches them off guard; it's probably one of the easiest retention vanishes out there! I like the force idea given in the DVDs since they can really know that they have a "free" choice and will never suspect a force. I feel that I should perform this again soon (I've only done it once) and see what happens.

Thales: I'm with you, as I also know probably not too many effects will impress me personally as a spectator. After all, I'm well versed magician. TA effects are designed to create "moments" for lay people in the real world. (This was actually a question asked of Paul in the interview: how hard was it to amaze him?!)

I remember when I was busking balloons back in the 80's I always tried to create a "moment". Sometimes someone just wanted a couple of pre-made balloons to go.
When possible, I would make them watch me make them to create that memorable "moment". I did not want to be a guy just handing out baloons, but an entertainer. I've actually told people this was a "moment" back then.

Say you are from a small town and visit New Orleans. Everyone should experience "moments" whether it be magic, music, balloons, a buggy ride, etc.
This is what I have taken from the TA set. Even if I can't get around to performing all the effects on TA, at least I can use the concept to create "moments" in the effects I already perform. But I'm definitely going to work on more TA effects.

Thanks for the report... would love to hear more. Any discussion of future projects? Anything said that was really surprising about anything on the set?

After a week off and on, I've finally finished reading this whole thread! That said:

I got my set about 2 weeks ago. I've only watched the first DVD and a half. (I refuse to start a new disk until I've watched everything, Easter Eggs, and all.) And as many have said before, this set is an experience. Every time I spin up a disk, I get a very awestruck feeling. So, my top hat's off to all who were involved in creating this wonderful set! I find everything about it excellent, and pertinent in some way. From wonderful magic, to psychology that noone seems to think about.

I just want to say, that so far, Twilight Angels has been one of THE MOST POWERFUL effects I've EVER performed. I may be shooting myself in the foot by saying this here, but I've moved people to tears by performing TA for a young, recently engaged couple I met. Try it. Talk about the sad little angels who seem destined to never meet. Have them BOTH sign the card. A signature across each heart. Talk about bringing them together. Perform TA. Watch the tears roll down. (Also, this works well for meeting that cute someone. Sign the card with him/her. perform TA. Ask for a number. Give yours. Done. Smile )

And to Tim Trono: I'm very glad to hear You're producing a Twilight deck! I can think of so many ideas for different face cards. But a question: Are there going to be Red AND Blue backed decks? Either way, sign me up for two!

Enjoy your sets, everyone!

If I remember correctly...

Paul said that the Twilight Decks will only be available in red, but refills are still available in blue.

TA is not his final project, and as Ace said, he has about ten more things in the works. His current favorite is SLR. When asked what his favorite creation is, he said that it's usually the one he's currently working on.

His new web site will be up in a few weeks - paulharrispresents.com

Ace, so well said. TA has been a journey for me that expect to be on for years.

If any of you are interested in buying a bunch of decks for cheap to use as practice decks for Ripped and Fryed, Stapled Warp, mercury folds, or any effect that ruins cards then check out this ebay sale:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie......82599028
I bought a set of 12 decks and they came within a few days and are all new. They are Tally-Ho Pinochle decks so lots of court cards if that matters to you.

For those who missed the e-mail:

From Jason:

Hi Guys,

I want to thank everyone for coming by and joining in with the chat, Paul and I had a great time. Lots of great questions and I think we were able to cover a lot of material. The chat came in at just around 2 hours. I'm going to be editing it up into chapters and making it available for download for those of you who couldn't make it. In addition, if you couldn't make it to the chat, you also have the chance to leave a comment or question for Paul right here in this forum! Just create a new topic for your question or leave a comment follow up question on someone else's questions/comment and Paul will try to get to as many as he can.

Let's try to ask some really good questions and maybe Paul will drop by more often!

Thanks again to everyone for all their enthusiasm and support of TAP and True Astonishments!

Best,
Jason

I wanted to share an opening for Twilight Angels. I use John Kennedy's Light paddle. I approach a lady of my dreams. I say the paddle is an angel catcher.
I catch the light.
Then I have this slide open pocket mirror. A light comes on when you open it.(It was a give-a-way at a hair stylists trade show I was working.)
As I open the mirror and the light comes on, I transfer it from the Light Paddle so it looks like I put it on the mirror. Not great amazing magic, but a cute moment.
Then I show the lady her reflection in the mirror of the Angel I caught.
At this point if she does not run screaming I go into the regular Twilight Angel routine on TA. And I use that mirror. With the light it is good for the dark rooms and clubs.

Here's a quick note for buyers in Germany: There is a German online shop that sells TA for 290 EUR (377.55 USD, today's rates). This seems quite overpriced, so I ordered directly from TAP, where the price is 300 USD + 47.50 USD shipping (Priority Mail International - the least expensive option). What I didn't take into account was the 33.79 EUR (44 USD) in custom duties that I had to pay when the package arrived. So the whole thing cost me over 390 USD!

Anyway, the shipment was extremely fast: I ordered last Wednesday, and it arrived on Monday, so it took only 3-4 workdays!

Oh yeah, and the product is absolutely amazing. But you already knew that.

Okay...so after watching everything in this series over and over (It took me a week)...I AM BLOW AWAY.

WOW.
Its changed the way I look at magic. So simple, visual, and its amazing.

The only thing I want right now...is the sets that Bro did.

The particular order in which he presented these effects. I am just curious. You see a lot of the same spectator in the videos seeing different effects. I would love to know what effects in what order he did them.

Is there anyway to find out?

I can always wait for the true astonishment forums too I guess.

I had to go out and buy a forcing deck made up of 6 of clubs for SS2. I have had a lot of great reactions with it so far. But the oddest reaction has been from a 20 year woman that totally bought my explanation that the folded palmed card was a method to switch cards in a BlackJack game. I do the effect for her and after she opens her hands and sees the Black Jack hand instead of the 16 she just says "And they never catch you when you do this in casinos?". That is it. No reaction at all. Just totally bought that I had unfolded the card, smoothed it out, switched it for the card in her hand all in a millisecond without her feeling it just because I had told her that is what I was going to do. I had to tell her "No, it is a magic trick. It is impossible to actually do that."

Thales,
that's awsome! Gotta love it.

I have taken the LVL$ idea a step further and I do it with a signed card that BLOWS PEOPLE AWAY. I use the same idea only with starting them signing a card. I "leave it on the table" usually under a drink and do the DOLLAR BILL IN POCKET presentation and simple murcery card fold the card into the setup and do the effect.

It kills when they see the final transpo to the pocket is a card in plain sight.
