So are you saying that all or just "some" of the effects are shown from the magician's point of view only? That is kind of strange, being I am used to the format of being in front as the "spectator" first. Sounds like they are trying to do some "Blaining?"

It's a mixture. After some of the performances, like I said in an earlier post, they sit at a table and repeat the effect and show it slowly to US. I don't know why they did not do that on all the effects. But they did on another one that I did not "get" during the spectator perfromance. And that cleared it up for me.

Do they show us only on the ones that we may have missed the effect in the live performance? Still sounds kind of odd to me. I don't see why it was so hard to show the effect from the side live, or from the spectator's POV on all of the effects.
The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini

No, it seems to be random. In Backlash 2 they don't show it again. Read my post on it about 8 posts up.
And some tricks that I see perfectly, they show again.
I would have to go through all the DVD's again to get an exact figure.
Maybe you can do this when you get yours.
That was just one example. I noticed this because it was the second trick on the first DVD. They could have showed it to us, as they repeated the trick in front of a couple of different groups. I really had no idea what happened at the end.

Like I said, it's no big deal. As they show it all in the explanations.

About the forum only for people who purchased it from astonishment project forums...

This was stated in the big long 66 page thread as well as their site that only people who bought it from them would receive access. Like said above, some dealers gave out free dvds, some gave overnight shipping, some gift certificates, you gotta pick which bonus item you want.

Forums are cool and all, but I imagine within a few months no one will be posting there...

I just got my set!!!

Wow is all I can say! There is a whole bunch of material on this DVD set that I want to add to my close up work. I have not watched everything yet but have skimmed through quite a few of the DVD's.

It was a great pleasure working with Bro & Paul on Tubular, what a great day that was.

I have so many favourites guys that I don't even know where to start.

I also think it is kind of silly to limit forum discussion on the TA site to just those who bought it there. It may sound good during the pre-order phase, but actually works against the promotion of the product. You are limiting what could be a HUGE discussion from those who bought the set everywhere worldwide. Hopefully they will open the forum to everyone who bought the set eventually. Besides, the sets still came from them originally anyway, and a site that makes a product should not be closing anyone off from the potnetial discussion and promotion of their own product.

I can understand the signed sets as a bonus, but the forum thing is silly and very limiting. Kind of reminds me of some forums that have a hidden "elite members forum" that only has 4 members in it talking, 2 admins and 2 mods.

In the forums Jason asked us whether or not we wanted to have the forums open or closed to the public. Most everyone thought that it would be better if we kept it closed, at least for the time being. Also, the forum has no problems with the amount and quality of posts seeing as there are currently 338 posts, most of which have been quite helpful.

Absolutely no reason that those of us who didn't buy direct from TA can't discuss on here though - perhaps in the 'Secret Sessions' section...

I'm up for it if you are.

Maybe in the in the near future those who did not buy directly from TA (me) could apply to be in the forum?

Is anyone compiling a list of how to get the "cookies" (Easter Eggs)?

I got my set yesterday, and started watching Disk 1. After a lot of tiresome button-pushing, only found two of the cookies.

Somehow, I don't find the hunt for these to be enjoyable or clever. I'd rather just be able to access them.

The guys over at the Theory11 forums put together a full list.

As much as I absolutely love this set, I agree that the hunt wasn't particularly fun. Especially for the easter eggs that have their entry during a video.

I watch mine on a computer. You can just navigate directly to the easter eggs by selecting which title (video) you want to view from the computers dvd player interface (varies by your software obviously).

Some of them are in the directories, and some are accessed actually while watching the DVDs.

I haven't tried this, but if you don't want the hunt, then access the DVD directory via a computer and you should be able to see the cookies there.

Sirbrad, I will address a few of the issues that you have.

My theory on the forums being closed is that it is a good thing and Jason has given the people on that forum the choice of whether we wanted them open or closed. 90 percent of the people on those forums wanted them left closed so Jason will be keeping them closed for now. If we vote and want them opened later on when things start to slow down in there, then we can do that. With the forums being closed Jason knows exactly who is using them and we don't have to worry about exposure or anyone bashing anyone else just for fun. It is a good environment with them closed and I personally want to keep them that way.

The camera angles that the effects are shot from are fine. Sometimes when you are filming something you can’t film it from any angle due to sun glare or bad lighting or any number of other things. I would rather see the effects shot the way they were with good lighting and not be able to see the climax before I would want to see the effect with the sun blaring me in the face the whole time or with shadows cast on the spectators or the performer.

Some of the effects are shown again one on one with the camera burning the magician’s hands. I assume that is to illustrate how clean the effects are. You can do some of these tricks with them burning your hands up and not get caught and I believe that is what the one on one performances are meant to illustrate.

Also, not all of the effects are taught from the magician’s point of view with writing on the screen but a lot of them are. When I first started watching I cringed a little when I saw this teaching style. After I opened up to it I actually think it is a very different and very good way to teach the effects. You can see exactly what it is supposed to look like and it does not make you feel like a 4th grader again with a teacher repeating the same things over and over.

Good to see Jason is taking care of things- I just wish he would send an email out instead of updating the forum here :X

Some of the effects are shown again with the camera so close because the effect is difficult to see in a performance video. Big Tiny is one of those. The performance was in front of real people, and it would have made the performance stilted if Bro held the deck right up to the camera so that we could see the reveal. I think that showing the performance again from the magician's POV was the way to go in some cases.

Pathian and RevJohn,

Many thanks for the quick answers! I hate watching DVDs on the computer (maybe once I get a media hub, that'll cease to be a factor), so having the list from Theory11 is terrific.

I enjoy this teaching style as well, even though I am continuously pushing the pause button until I get the step down. I've made my way to disc 5, and I'm feeling overwhelmed by everything--next step is to go back through with a notebook and pick out which effects to concentrate on. I am very happy with my purchase! -J.R.

As for the forums, you can still keep it closed but available for people with true astonishments to apply that way no matter where you got it if you have it you can be a member. Now I don't know you apply to it seeing as I got mine from MJM, but it sounds like you have to fill out some form and email it to Jason, you could very easily add a security question to the form and even have it change between applicants that way when one person applies and gets in his answer to the question wont work for the other people that he is probably going to tell. The questions could be anything that only people that have the TA set can answer something from the DVD or I know when I released Holy Grail we had a forum that to get in you had to put in a unique number that was on the bottom of the DVD. So I'd really like in the future for the forums to possibly open up to spark more discussion about the set and effects, as I already myself have a few (I think) different routes to go on effects that I'd like to share somewhere then an open forum, just for the people that purcahsed this amazing set and are serious about performing the effects and not some 12 yr old youtuber wanting just the secrets.

But that my 2 cents!! Smile

Oh and by the way watch the performance for the vanishing deck trick, and towards the end of the performance section the people at the restaturaunt are reacting and a guy looks at the camera and says about Bro and I quote, "Man this guys going to be something someday" LOL That was the funniest quote by a spectator Ive heard...how more of a something can you get...Director for True Astonishments!! that's about the tip of the top.

One of the main selling points of purchasing through TAP was the bonus forum with which we could discuss TA. Everyone who ordered from other dealers was conscious of this and got their own free bonuses from their dealers... should I be asking dealers who gave away free DVDs to give me some seeing as I have TA because I bought it from another dealer? No. You got what you paid for. Case closed. You enjoy your freebies and I'll enjoy mine.

Exactly!

I've got two kids, so with all this talk of the closed forum for those who didn't buy from TAP (but received other perks), I couldn't help but think of the following:

Not posting to flame anyone, just hoping it brings a smile to a few faces.
