My set arrived this past Monday. I selected "slow freight" delivery so no surprise that it took a week to get here.

My general impression is this is a fabulous collection. I'm strictly an amateur and don't spend a lot of time on magic but I'm really happy that I bought this. If I had passed, I'd be kicking myself repeatedly.

The first thing that struck me was the overall quality of the set The wooden box makes the collection truly unique and the individual packaging of each DVD is a great touch. It would have been so easy (and less expensive) to package 3 DVD's together. The Astonishment folks did not disappoint. My high expectations were exceeded.

Well done Paul, Jason, Tim, and everyone else who contributed. Smile

regards,

Not posting to flame anyone, just hoping it brings a smile to a few faces.

So are you saying that all or just "some" of the effects are shown from the magician's point of view only? That is kind of strange, being I am used to the format of being in front as the "spectator" first. Sounds like they are trying to do some "Blaining?"

The tricks are shown in a real performance situation. Some of the same ones are also shown in a close up camera view. Everything is explained in detail by the time you watch everything.

Although I tried, I cannot really give a correct answer to this question as I really don't know what "Blaining" means.
If it refers to that guy on TV, I've only seen him once, standing in ice, I was flipping between Miss America and him, and every time I flipped back, he was still standing there, so guess what show won!
I have really never seen him perform. I work myself doing magic at night, so I don't get to see TV specials, and I watch very little or no TV anyway.( Now all my spare time can be spent watch TA).

I thought a little more about posting in the 'Secret Sessions' section here with ideas I've had about TA and well... it's a bit of a dilemma.

See, the TA Forums are a GREAT idea because you have a set if you're a member... whereby posting here about it, not all readers own TA - and they could possibly deduce more about the routines than they're entitled to, if there's open discussion on a Café forum.

I wonder if there's any merit to starting up a forum open to ALL owners of TA so we can discuss new handlings, ideas etc (I have some interesting handlings for Warped, Ripped and also quite a different routine based on the Vanishing Deck that I'm more than happy to share if it helps kick things off). To verify membership, perhaps answer a question about the actual packagaging - perhaps regarding one of the quotes on the disk sleeves or something like that, rather than something on the DVD's (which, inevitably, will eventually become available on Torrents etc)...

Any takers?!

Cheers,

Jamie.

I like seeing live performances. I did not see any advantage to the technique of presenting "split" perfomances that was sometimes used on TA. That is showing several live performances but cutting between during the course of the trick

I personally have not posted or read much on secret sessions, for the very reason of the trolling that 'can' be done. Unlike many marketed effects where knowing the secret is only so good, since you lack the devise/product if you did not purchase it; most everything on TA can be performed/reproduced by simply knowing the method. For this reason, I would only discuss presentation/variations on a closed forum, that ensures ownership of the TA set.

Would you like we to post a list of the cookies and where to find them on a separate post or will that spoil things? Happy to do whatever.

What people are saying about this set is not hype, its is the truth.

Even tough the set had been "hyped" allot before the release the set was so much better then I ever would have imagine. Every effect is a worker and almost every effect can be done in any situation totally surrounded and most handelings are so streamlined that it feels like most of the tricks are self working.

The interviews are alsot great and very inspirational.

Ah, well, wish I'd known. I will just have to content myself with TA itself. Such a hardship.

Has anyone watched Patrick Snowden's Tensegrity? I watched this today and caught myself in the mirror with my head turned like a dig does when they are trying to understand something. My mind whirled with methods and I was wrong on everyone of them.

I can't even imagine anyone coming up with something like this.

Yep! Blew me away.
This is from my review of that piece, earlier in this thread.

"Tensegrity -
This is another that is easily worth the price of the set for me. This is an entire education on a principle that I know nothing about. This is like discovering magic for the first time for me... I am simply blown away by Patrick's thinking on this one. I watched the performance as the first thing that went through my head was "WHAT THE %$@&???". No joke. This is STRONG. This should be a box set by itself. Patrick is extremely thorough in his explanation and it's like he says, this is simply the brickwork. This is sure to become an entire branch of magic by itself. I don't know how else to say this guys... this one, to me, is one of the craziest and strongest things you can do. It's like bringing the incredible feeling of witnessing a Copperfield Illusion or something... to the intimate venue of close up performances... and to steal a line from Patrick here, it's like you stop time. At one point it really appears that everything is mid-tumble and yet it's frozen in space and time. I shed a tear when I think about how powerful this is. Patrick, if you see this... you have completely outdone yourself on this one. If you or Paul ever put out anything else on this concept, count me in as your first customer please! I'll be working on this one a lot! "

Sirbrad, I will address a few of the issues that you have.

My theory on the forums being closed is that it is a good thing and Jason has given the people on that forum the choice of whether we wanted them open or closed. 90 percent of the people on those forums wanted them left closed so Jason will be keeping them closed for now.

Yes, but was that decision made in "pre-order mode" and will it hold up later on? I doubt it. Of course those who spent the money to per-order will selfishly assume that is the right choice, but inevitably it is not. There is going to be many out there who bought the set from shops that come up wit interesting ideas, and they will not be able to contribute to the forums of this product because they are being closed out for not pre-ordering. This is of no benefit to the TA community whatsoever, in fact it only limits it severely.

One of the main selling points of purchasing through TAP was the bonus forum with which we could discuss TA. Everyone who ordered from other dealers was conscious of this and got their own free bonuses from their dealers... should I be asking dealers who gave away free DVDs to give me some seeing as I have TA because I bought it from another dealer? No. You got what you paid for. Case closed. You enjoy your freebies and I'll enjoy mine.

Justin

To the contrary, I did not order it yet and the place I am ordering from has no bonuses. Bonus DVDs are one thing, forums for discussing a product universally is another.

Blaining is concentrating on spectator reaction soley, and sometimes it is unclear what the magician actually did. However Blaine shoots many different angles to cover it all. Thanks for the insight.

Jay, I think you nailed it perfect on those observations. When I first read them, I decided to make Patrick's effect the last one I viewed. The feeling I had watching it will stay with me for a long time.
