The New Las Vegas Leaper,

has anyone seen this? What is the difference between this. and the original Paul Harris routine? You can write here, or PM me if needed.

Someone reviewed the True Astonishment DVDs here (http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&start=0) and said this:

What a strong way to open disc 2. I can see why they didn't want to reveal the new ending, and I won't here either. If other reviews are posted, I recommend skipping any thorough details of this effect. You'll be glad you did when you watch the DVD. They've basically added a whole new phase to the end of the classic LVL that makes total sense, and provides a really powerful effect for minimal work. This ain't yo mama's cards across routine.

You may not get much more than that. Smile

I don't have this DVD set yet, so I can't chip in either.

Personally, I hope nobody reveals the new approach.

I agree on that sentiment. A level of secrecy is always a good thing, but it'll be a matter of time before it's out there.

It's in print. Not a secret any more. Only a matter of minutes before a youtube video shows up. Is there a pool for how many minutes?

I thought secrecy was a prerequisite to magic's growth.

? just for lay audiences.

The trick is in print - not a secret - just a commodity.

Owning the source for a trick or idea is a courtesy - especially since most of what's in print can be found on the internet pretty darn quickly.

I will say this much... the actual name is "LVL$." And this... It is a thing of beauty.

Are you doing the routine yet? If so how is it working for your audiences?

I am not doing it yet, as it was only released this week on the True Astonishments DVD set. I'm still working my way through the initial viewing of the discs, and I am nowhere near the point of performance. Miles to go... (and hoping that other purchasers are as respectful of the material). If you like the original you will probably love this, with the kicker ending.

Any chance on getting a report on how the spouse or family reacts to the performance section of that video?

( note bene - not asking for any details or description of the effect - just how it plays for people )

Los Vegas Leaper is probably my favorite routine from Art of Astonishment, I can't imagine how they could make it any better (although this is Paul Harris, so I should expect great things Smile).

I guess I'm both selfish and protective; I haven't even shared the performance clips with my wife and kids. Smile All in due time.

And yes... LVL$ does indeed surpass the original (at least in my opinion at this point, given that I have yet to personally test it on an audience).

Yes. The original version, for good or bad, is one of the few card effects that my wife associates with me. How do I know this? She told me last night.

The new version blew her mind. Absolutely, positively blew it. She is familiar with the basic concept and she just loved the new addition. I'll be honest in that she realized something was going on (based on the effect, which is why I don't want the description just thrown out there, think of it similiar to Lior Manor's Mobile Opener where the "secret" or "value" (see below) is in the presentation).

Regarding secrecy et al. A magic effect is most definitely NOT, repeat NOT, a commodity. A commodity is

anything for which there is demand, but which is supplied without qualitative differentiation across a market. In other words, copper is copper. Rice is rice. Stereos, on the other hand, come in many varieties of quality.

Magic tricks are "value added". They differ from one another in a qualitative way. To say they are commodities is simply incorrect, a common misunderstanding of the word "commodity" but incorrect regardless.

As for my stated desire for the effect not to be described, it is more simple than secrecy, because the dvds are for sale. It has to do with somebody hearing the new approach, figuring out an "inferior" way to do it, then using that flawed base to perform the effect.

Often, by now, there are so many veiled hints that the method is completely spelled out just by reading the thread.

While your opinion may make sense to you - neither of the paragraphs above are IMHO congruent to the world in which we live.

First item - you can walk into a store and trade dollars for an item in shrinkwrap - and whether or not that item is magic related or rice is irrelevant to the exchange - you're buying a thing including its right of disposal.

Second item - you deleted yourself from your statements of intent and beliefs. Try that one again using well formed statements and see what's there to amuse.

Here is the way I feel about my review of The New Las Vegas Leaper. Try to follow me on this analogy.

You have a ship and that ship has two holes in it. One hole is on the bottom and is allowing gallons of water per second to flow into the ship and the other hole is near the top of the ship and is not taking on water yet. The many websites out there that reveal exactly how a trick is performed (exposure sites) are the hole in the bottom of the ship. My review which gives a description of the effect is the hole in the top of the ship that isn't taking on any water yet. By trying to prevent people from writing an in-depth description of the effect you are trying to patch the hole at the top of the ship without doing anything to fix the hole on the bottom of the ship. When in reality, if you patch the bottom hole the water will never even reach the top hole and the top hole will not be a problem.

What I am saying is this, people are curious by nature. They are going to look for an in-depth description of an effect before they buy it. They want to know what they are spending their money and "Who can blame them?", I do too. If they see an in-depth review of an effect they may become excited about the effect and want to purchase it. However, if no one writes that in-depth review, while searching they will eventually stumble across an exposure website and learn the trick that way. I believe that instead of promoting exposure and poor performances, in-depth reviews are actually preventing them.

Sometimes just describing the "effect" in general, would basically be giving the whole thing away.

As we become better magicians eventually we realize that the secret is hardly what makes a trick worth doing. It's usually "the other stuff" that counts.

The presentation, the plot, a new twist, etc.

I don't know what this new version is but perhaps just knowing what the new ending is, would hurt sales drastically.

I can hear them now..."Oh. That. I'm not paying $300 just for that. I'll figure out a way to do the same thing myself".

Tell us how you like it. Tell us if you think it's worth the money. But keep the dirty little secrets to yourself.
