I've been playing around with the dancing cane for a while now and I still can't find a really good thread to use for it. I use Cotton Coated Nylon Carpet Thread which is was McBride suggested on his Magic on Stage series, but I think there's something better out there...If you guys use something else please let me know...thanks!

I believe what you are looking for is Black Pure Silk No.10. (At least that is what I used to use.)

Stanyon, is this a common brand worldwide?

James,
That is the brand name on the spool I have. I think that as long as the thread is pure silk size "A" the results should be the same.

Everyone who does the cane, myself included recommends Coates & Clark Cotton Coated Upolstry Thread. Yes, you have to light it correctly. But if you do it's beautiful!

I think it's worth a web search to find the legendary 000 black silk thread used by the masters. I also recommend the thread that Abe Creekmore sold with his dancing cane. Don't know if anyone carries Abe's products, though. Denny Haney used to carry most of the Creekmore products and might be able to help you. I know Denny had a great dancing cane routine, too.

There are a lot of synthetic threads out there now that are super strong and very thin. I played around with some 5 pound test of Spider Wire fishing line years ago with the dancing pool cue. The problem I found back then is they shine. If one could figure out a way to color them a non-reflective black that won’t rub off you would be set.

I used 4 strands of invisible thread for years .. I must be replaced after every show and is very delicate... the routine must be short and sweet ...but it can be done in many more situations.
