And here we go with some thoughts for discs 7 and 8. There's some absolutely killer material presented in these discs.
Disc 7 -Water Trap What can I say about Water Trap? First off, it's certainly going to make me explore the original Fire Trap from Doug Bennett. I also think that this might be the best effect from the entire set. It's definitely in my top 5. A borrowed coin is signed on both sides, and held by a spectator. It vanishes from their hand, and reappears embedded inside the cover of a matchbook. This is absolutely incredible, both in effect and method. The vanish from the spec's hand is diabolical and very clean. The prep to the matchbook is minimal. While it can't be prepped right in front of your audience, it can be done very quickly, and you can also prep a bunch of books at once so you're ready for a night on the town. In this effect you're so far ahead of your audience, it's not even fair. And it really, truly is their signed coin inside the matchbook at the end. They remove it, and they can keep it. This is very easy to prep. I prepped 3 matchbooks as I was watching Bro go through the explanation. It's also easy to accomplish the entire effect. I tried it out privately, and just loved seeing that coin embedded in the match book. I absolutely can not wait to try this out for real people. Very powerful magic for a small amount of effort, and virtually no skill required. -Dunn's Deal This is another very strong effect with a diabolical method. I know that Out of this World, Galaxy, and other variations are really popular among magicians, and this is sure to join the ranks. Thanks to Sean Dunn, you can now perform OOTW from a borrowed, shuffled deck, thanks to a sneaky method that made me chuckle. There are some also some good presentational hooks that get the spectator emotionally involved in the effect. -Invisible Palm Aces Clips of Wayne Houchin performing this effect have been going around the net for awhile now. His performance and explanation of the effect is terrific. I'm sure you all know the effect, so I won't go into that. This is just visual, powerful magic and it's really too easy for the reactions that it will get for you. -Truly Screwed A more improv take on the Screwed Deck idea. 2 gimmicks are supplied for you to perform this effect. You take the deck, "screw" it once to get a funky deck that's half face-up, and half face-down, and then make the deck normal again. You don't get all of the perks as the separately retailed version (which sells for $50), but the performance section got some very strong reactions for lay audiences. This one will require some real world testing before I can solidify my feelings on it. Disc 8 -Belly Button Here's one for all you non-card/non-coin guys. A button (as you'd typically wear on a shirt, hat, or backpack) is pinned to a spec's shirt, and it melts through to the inside. This is a neat, off-kilter effect. A button/gimmick are included. You'll need to be confident in entering someone's personal space to pull this off, but it's a neat and very different effect. I don't think I've seen anything else quite like it. One of the coolest things is that you can wear the button, and if someone asks about it, you have a perfect intro into the effect (although they don't recommend this an as opener, since it is a somewhat intimate effect). -Son of Stunner A cool triumph/prediction effect/color-changing deck that definitely fooled me when I watched it, yet is surprisingly simple in method. Not much else to say here, other than I look forward to trying it. It's definitely a fooler. -Muscle Bend I was 100% intrigued by the "organic gimmickless gimmick" description of the effect. I watched this disc last night, while very tired, and this wasn't exactly what I was expecting with this effect. I watched the entire disc again today, and in a wakeful state, I liked this a lot more. There are some clever elements going on. My favorite thing about it is that you can bend the coin yourself, or have the spectator do it. -Unstable Label This is another that I didn't quite understand upon first viewing. (Disclaimer - Don't watch the discs from this set very late at night when you've already been pulling late nights. You won't get the full impact or appreciation of the effects) However, upon 2nd viewing, and watching the explanation, I really like this one. I've never owned any other "label in bottle" effects, so I don't know how this one compares directly. There's great psychology at play with a simple and convincing method that only needs a little bit of prep. Another keeper from Andrew Gerard. And that's it for Discs 7 and 8. I particularly loved disc 7. If there's anyone reading this who isn't planning on getting the whole set, but rather a few individual discs when they're released someday down the road, then you should definitely not overlook disc 7. Thanks for all great reviews, greetings from the other side of planet!
I just watch Dunn's Deal, and I think the presentation make the effect raise the bar to a mental state / level. Not difficult to perform but great in reaction. Water Trap is something what the closet thing you can perform in close up magic, such as those effect Cyril / Blaine performed in TV special. The only drawback is the city where I live no longer allow to smoke in most places and matchbook is not common anymore. That is the only little drawback. Other than that, TA will occupy serious magic student for some time (in terms of years to come).
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

I'm on the same page as you with Water Trap, Steven. Earlier today, I was thinking that Paul and Bro could have easily sold the exclusive rights to this effect to Blaine or Angel, and they would have had a great piece of impossible magic for a TV show. And all of us would have sworn that there had to be some fancy editing involved for it to be accomplished. Instead, we all get to enjoy it and share it with our audiences!

I was a little worried that someone might complain and afterwards the smell of smoke was pretty strong. Probably should be done out on the patio instead. Just to say that I don't think that having smoking banned someplace should limit you too much. Also, the trick went over great! Total amazement. This one is real magic. |

I'm glad people are enjoying Dunn's Deal. I love this effect and because I am mainly a mentalist it's the only card trick I perform that doesn't invlove mind reading. This is a very easy effect to perform and it always gets a great reaction.

Can anyone explain the difference between Water Trap and Fire Trap? I have Fire Trap, but not the TA. You can PM if you like and we can compare notes.

I wish I could, but I don't have the original Fire Trap. In the Phoote Note, Paul says that the prep was quite a bit more intensive for Fire Trap than Water Trap. The prep for Water Trap really can be done in a few seconds.

PMed you.
Originally, the Fire trap method was used for a coin in business card. |

I'm so upset about these reviews... because they are making me EVEN MORE excited, but I can't buy True Astonishments until I pay off magic camp. I'm going INSANE!

I`ve performed Truly Screwed several times during my last walk-around gig (it resets after you perform it and you`re left with a regular deck. When the deck is put away, you`re ready to do it again for someone else.) and they all loved it. It`s a really strange piece. Very different for spectators.
I like Dunn`s Deal but I don`t see any motivation for the dirty work. The pseudo explanation for it on the DVD didn`t have any relevance to the effect. |

Having been through all the dvds a few times, I have to say that Water Trap is my favorite item (followed incredibly closely by Ripped and Fryed). I used to do Fire Trap and this method is much more practical especially since the new prep allows you to prepare several matchbooks so you can be ready for multiple performances.

If anyone likes Titanas' FADE and doesn't like the possible problematics of borrowing the coin, you might try using FADE with the Muscle Bend. Sit down, take out a coin, place it on your knee, talk about the effect or whatever, pick up the coin, place it in the crotch of your arm, flex and bend it. You end up with the same effect (start and end with empty hands) and you don't have to hope for the best when borrowing the coin. If you own TA I think you'll understand what I mean. Just an idea for those who are looking for alternatives.

Holy Thread Resurrection!
Has anyone in the UK found a good source for the matchbooks for Water Trap? All the ones I've got hood f have a plasticy coating to the matchbook, which seems to prevent the prep-work done to the matchbook from repairing, if you know what I mean. Do matchbooks in the states have a plasticy coating, or are they completely made of cardboard? Rob |
