In a new twist on the Arabian Flying Carpet, the Carpet has the additional ability of travelling through time. A faithful addition because the time-travel ability still remains in accordance with the idea of the Carpet as a mode of transportation. After all, time-travel is transportation too. In my other threads such as "Decapitated Head Perched on Blade of Scimitar," I've tried to inject new freshness into the Arabian Nights, new freshness into stories which have become almost boring cliches. It especially gratified me when I came up with the adaptation of the Head on Scimitar because it made me kill two birds with one stone, that is, to come up with something I would enjoy seeing in an Arabian Nights movie, plus also creating a story which can be built around the STAGE-trick of Head on Sword.

Along those lines, I enjoy how other writers have injected new freshness into the tired cliche of the Flying Carpet by adding the idea of time travel. But how to use that as a stage-illusion? In trying to answer that, I suddenly veered off into a tangent by tackling not the carpet but time travel itself. My idea is that the best way to actually demonstrate time travel visually is by using the Cut & Restored Rope, or, for that matter, any Restoration trick. The way it would be presented and explained is that you'll show time-travel into the PAST. In the dim recesses of my memory, I recalled a science-fiction story I had read during the 1960s where a scientist had invented a ray for time travel. In one scene, he deliberately picked up a priceless Ming Vase and flung it to the floor to shatter it into fragments. Then he shone the time-ray on the many fragments. As explained by him, the time-ray creates a localized zone in which the fragments have travelled into the past. In this zone, the fragments have time-travelled into the past BEFORE the vase was shattered. As a result, the vase becomes restored. So I apply and adapt that science-fiction idea to legerdemain.
But how to apply that to the Carpet? I have not found any application yet. Maybe it could simply call for the magician to stand on the Carpet while he performs the Restoration trick and simply say it's the Carpet that creates the localized time-travel. Maybe some of you other gentlemen can come up with some other ideas to expand on this time-travel presentation.

Just found the source from the 1960s from which I got the idea of using Time-Travel for the purpose of doing Restoration. It was "Tick-Tock Traps Of The Time-Commander," written by Bob Haney. That principle can be applied to Stage-magic by using Time-Travel to perform not only ROPE-restoration but also to restore a torn newspaper or broken wrist-watch (with mortar and pestle props). But since the Flying Carpet comes from Arabian motif, I would specifically use the trick of the Cut and Restored Turban. As I said,the whole purpose of the stage-trick is to show Time-Travel. Time Travel not into the future but into the PAST at which time, say, a ROPE, had Not yet been cut. That way, the Cut Rope becomes Restored. So far, that's the only way a stage trick can show Time Travel into the Past.

While surfing the web, I found that the VERY FIRST time travel story was "Urashima Taro," a story from ancient Japan. Is anybody else familiar with that story?

Yes, it quite similar to the Rip van Winkle and other Irish stories where a man spends hunderds of years in a palace under the sea.
It's not really a time travel story as we know them.
The first book is Mark Twain's Connecticut yankee at the court of King Arthur, but there's another short story before Twain's using a watch as the time machine.

Actually,there's a big difference between Rip van Winkle and the Japanese tale. In the case of Rip van Winkle, it's suspended animation because he over-slept. But in the case of the Japanese tale, it's time travel in that time sped up for Urashima even though he remained awake.

Maybe somebody can help me on this. I'm trying to find a time travel story I read 25 to 30 years ago. It was about school in a futuristic era. At that school, there is a History class which is taught in a very unusual way. That is, to authenticate what is taught, the teacher uses a time-travel machine to actually transport famous people from past history to speak in the class-room. As I recall vaguely, the teacher time-transported Napoleon and Cleopatra to the classroom. The story was quite clever at showing the individual idiosyncrasies of those historical personages. Does anybody else remember this story?

If for a child, get them to meet Aladdin or Princess Jasmin when they time travel. Or a representation of each (copyright and such).
