Hello Everyone!

I've been trying to find info on "The Plank Illusion"... but not having lots of luck.

This is the illusion where two people of approximately the same height stand at opposite ends of a level plank or platform. One of the persons is clearly a little taller than the other. They switch places and the taller person now appears to be shorter.

Any feedback as to where I might find information as to how this illusion works would be great. Thank you all... continued success!

Can not recall if there is one at this site but it does have about 2 dozen optical illusions. Go to http://www.mindfake.com/thumbnails.html

My friend has an optical illusion book that has this illusion, ...so I'll ask him if it has the explanation.

Night_Crawler

I did some research and I found a great site. This site has a video demonstration of this illusion but it may take a while to load. It also has the explanation for how the illusion works.

The URL is... Here!

I believe this illusion is at the Exploritorium in San Francisco. I may have also seen it at the Franklin Institute in Philly. The way it works that one side of the room extends much, much further away from the audience than the other. Being much further away than the opposite, nearby corner the floor to ceiling height would normally appear smaller, because it's further away, according to the rules of perspective. However, the further away corner is build larger to the exact extent needed so that both corners seem to be of equal height. Now, you put the small person in the close up (shorter) corner, and a tall person in the distant (taller) corner, and they both look the same height.

Let me know if that is clear.

And the floor to ceiling height
Oh, my friend we're older but no wiser, for in our hearts the dreams are still the same...

Hi jamesinla, I believe you are correct the explanation was a bit confusing but I understand it. Also, if anyone knows how the ames room illusion works, the plank illusion is the same principle but without the room. That is what jamesinla was saying but I just thought I'd clarify.

Also look in the movie, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Before they enter 'the chocolate room' they go through a hallway that keeps getting smaller, so they appear to be getting bigger. But the best movie to watch is a Dutch movie called, “De Zee die Denkt.” This is a movie which took 14 years to develop. Some guy wrote and re-wrote a script with a lot of Esher/optical illusions in it. There is one scene when a person walks from one end in a room to another one and he seems to get smaller. In 'the making of" on the dvd they go into detail on how a lot of stuff was filmed.

I found the room on their site!

good luck!

A late addendum for anyone:

If you get to any place that has a tourist's "Mystery Spot" such as in Oregon or near San Simeon, you will find a raft of similar great optical illusions worked into a great 1/2 hour tour. Knott's Berry Farm has a similar setup, and may still have it.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.
