I am playing with a coins through hand effect but I want to make the last coin vanish and appear with the other 2 coins on the table from the start but I don't want to use any gaffs or extras and I wanted the coin to be in full view the entire time. What I have so far is the 2 coins on the table stacked and the third coin goes through my hand twice then finaly vanishes. that's basicaly all I have for this. Not even sure how to vanish it and then make it appear with the other coins without unnaturalness.

I'd like to know more about your concern about extras and gaffs. what's up with that?

Is there a particular reason not to use an extra? I think it might it might be easier to ditch something like an extra then it would to secretly place the last coin on the top of the other two. However, I don't know the the whole routine you are trying to present maybe there is some reason to pick up the other two coins then the addition of another would be easy.

I'd use the coin magician's favorite gaff to show it on the table.

Ok, how about a false transfer, any will do, putting the coin ultimately in palm. Go to pick up one of the coins off of the table. Either you could really pick one up or simulate picking one up. If you really pick one up you add the palmed coin onto the coin left on the table. Use the picked up coin as a wand. Put the coin back down onto the stack and you now vanish and reveal.
Is your phobia of the using a gaff in this situation because you don’t want to leave a gaff unprotected near the spectator? |

I don't mind having gaffs in play or anything like that, I just don't feel they are necessary. I don't like being in that position of having either a dirty hand or a dirty pocket and I hate having to ditch something or be accused of using some kind of trick coin or extra coin etc. Once somebody thinks it and calls it, the others will think it too and then it is no fun anymore because they already have a method in their mind and that is "always the way to do it". I feel that almost everything that you do with a gaff can be done with just some sleight of hand other than maybe the karate coin and folding coin. I just prefer to be clean beginnning and end.

Mark, Take a look at Dan Harlan's video from A-1 think Meir Yedid owns the rights to it now. He has a routine on there that might help with the last coin. Also Sankey has a routine along the same lines as Dan's but, I can't remember if its a video or book.
Best, Joe

Did you know that a karate coin and a folding coin are both dupes and gaffs?
The effect (only x coins) is not directly related to the method used (can be anything from lots of dupes to assistants, trick furniture, stooges...) There is a sad trend with magic newbies to confuse the apparent conditions of a trick with actual constraints applied when designing its methodology. Darwin Ortiz addresses this in his books. Magic dealers make things worse by describing items in terms of conditions (no trap doors) rather than in terms of the things you must have mastered in order to use an item. Now this is not to suggest one cannot do what's described in Ponsin's book for the coins across and get away with it - I just suggest folks spend their time learning how to perform for people so audience management and presentation issues don't make matters more difficult than they have to be. BTW there's a handling described in that book where you get all the coins into a volunteer's hands which should be okay for just one coin into a group already there. And we already know how useful the HPC sleight is, right? There you have two answers. I wish you the best in finding a handling which serves you in your working conditions.

Unless you are using an inferior gaff or your skill is not up to snuff for the complexity of the effect, I don't see why it would make a difference.
People have accused me of using gaffs when I haven't been using any. Lay people don't understand how magic is done; most people know you're fooling them, they just don't know how. People can draw their own conclusions about how you did it--as long as they're entertained, what do you care what they think? Do you think people are going to believe you wield some kind of supernatural power if you don't use a gaff? It seems to me that this has more to do with your own self-image than with what your audience thinks, or the efficacy of your performance. |

Well your post in quite interesting actually. What you want is quite difficult to do without extras or gaffs because of the phrase 'in full view all the time'. There's only one method which I can think of and unfortunately it doesn't have a name. Its found on page 76 of Modern Coin Magic by Bobo and its under the section of coin to key. Bobo referred to the sleight as 'an old sleight' and didn't name it. With that sleight, you can close your hand with the coin in your left hand and make it appear on the stack of coins on the table via a c****** p*** with a 'chink' sound.
Even though it is possible to do what you want, I highly suggest you use a gaff WITH an extra. Makes life much easier and it makes your act more visual. All the best!
