For years I have tried to obtain an answer to this question:
how does one locate a Vent? They never list in the Yellow Pages. Why is this? Where do they list? Do they list at all? Does one have to look under "marionnettes", "puppets" or call talent agencies or what? Marty K |

Marty,
My recommendation is to do a web search. You can find a couple of excellent suppliers of figures and materials including Maher and Axtell Expressions. If you can't find these on a web search, let me know and I'll email or post the addys. Regards, Brett |

Hi Marty...
If you are looking for a vent where you live you might try calling either the local magic clubs and/or magic shops. Sometimes magic shops post the business cards of the local magicians, clowns, and even vents. The clubs might be able to give you a contact as well...good luck! Continued success to you and yours... Another resource is to go through the "Vent" supply stores found on the Net and peruse the list of entertainers using their products or they may be able to give you contact information of clients near your locale.
Follow the trail left behind from Vent resources, it is very easy... http://www.axtell.com is where I and many others are listed ... even contacting some of those on Steve Axtell's list may be able to provide names and resources of folks not listed as well. I surely do hope that a few of the hints offered by myself and others previously will have served as some help. You might try libraries and schools as this is where the bulk of my performances with my little friends have taken place. also http://www.schoolshows.com can be a resource. p.s. "What's up Doc?" "How is Jerry Ferguson?" Later my friend, rr |

Thanks all,
I have been away and this was the first check on answers, so apologies to all if you believe that you were speaking to the wind. I will try those avenues but notice how limited they are and how one needs the inside info from you folks in order to find them. So, can anyone also explain, why do Vents NOT advertise and make themselves as visible as almost all other performing artists (and this really is an ART)? Why are they NEVER listed in the Yellow Pages? I can tell you this, the local magic stores have never been able to give me leads, irrespective of which city I have been in when I called. So, Magic Stores don't know, Yellow Pages does not contain it, newspaper advertising never sems to include it in classified ads as it does with magicians and others. Question: WHY? Marty K |

You know Marty... I've never seen the stats on this, but I believe that there are probably fewer vents than magicians. So even though they DO advertise, and ARE known by others (magicians, shops, and other vents) they just don't pop up on a quick scan.
Then there are those of us who fit in both categories... Vagician Mentriloquists. A confused lot. My regards, Brett |

Hello there.
As you can see by my avatar I am a Nearly Normal Ventriloquist and Magician. I picked the Nearly Normal years ago because it was memorable. People can find me through a google or other search such as with Nearly Normal or with my name Harris Deutsch. Other items like Laughologist or Missouri Magician will pull me up in a web search. I have not used the yellow pages yet. I am a part time pro whose show has become puppet heavy. I still have put the Magic first in the name Nearly Normal Magic and Puppet Show. If you have time let me know if my name comes up in any of your searches. Besides Axtells site you can also join world/vents on Yahoo Groups and get in contact with Vents world wide. I got involved in Magic as soon as I heard that Shari Lewis died... I pulled my car over to the side of the road and said a prayer for her and hoped Lamb Chop would still live on. I vowed at that time to start studying magic so I could make people happy. I wanted to also learn more about vents and someday have a side-kick to add into the show.
I needed to learn a balloon dog for a trick and my love of twisting just took over. Now all my magic includes balloons! I do parties, special events and love to see people SMILE I vowed to find vent info online, I just did a search on yahoo and all the other search engines. Try this site http://www.inquista.com/ it is the international Vent site.
