I used to get crap from older family members all the time cause, their family and that's what they do. But then again I was 13 at the time so they just really didn't want to give me the chance to fool them. It's very tempting to make a heckler seem like an idiot but we as performers we should be able to make everyone have fun and its sad when people just do not understand that magic is not a contest and they don't realize the magician is trying to give them a wonderful gift.
Well there is tons of great advice in this post but the thing that has worked with me most is just doing flourishes like card springs and one hand shuffles and stuff. Not to like showoff but just to give people who are older or just don't want to take me seriously the feeling that I've spent sometime practicing what I do so I can show it to them. Well this might not work with your wife's aunt because its a completely different interaction than I with my family, but you could re-frame the way you present the trick to her. One idea would be to direct yourself to her and ask her to see something cool that you think she would like and that its related to gambling. Explain that you know that as a gambler she already knows a lot of that stuff and that your just practicing that routine so if she could give you her opinion on it after the trick you would really appreciate it.(Then do any of the gambling type tricks) |

I think you should consider an effect that uses a stooge. Make it someone who will enjoy putting one over on auntie, and won't be suspected. If this is interspersed with other tricks, it'll drive her crazy.

I can't answer your question the way you want because it's a moot point; if you're trying to 'zing' her, you'll just end up ticking off someone else, and that sets the rest of them against you. Ok, I know it's family, but didn't you say it's your wife's family? The last thing you want to do is set up some kind of antagonistic battle between you and her. She may have had some bad experience with a magician at some point, and this is her way of getting back.
One thing you might want to consider is taking a look at your presentations that you're currently using and see if they're not contributing to the response you're getting. I say this, not to be accusing, but because I'd experienced the same issue because some of my presentations were "challenges" rather that "entertainments". Once I'd removed the challenge, the antagonism went away... Just a thought... Rick

Larry Jennings' "Impossible" is a nice impromptu trick... the spectator can shuffle the deck, the only preparation required is a crimp facing away from her, after the shuffling. After that, it's self-working! I've never had a spectator notice the crimp... they'll be looking for other types of sleights like palming, yet the real magic is mathematical!

If you must (I wouldn't) then zinging is likely to **** her off more. What's going to happen the next time there's a family get together? You're going to start an emotional arms race with her where see gets more and more stroppy and your performances are more and more designed to hurt her.
5 years from the rest of us will see a story on the 10 O'Clock news about a magician who murdered a relative by deliberately messing up a Zig Zag Lady routine. If you must perform for her do the quickest simplest trick you can so you can get back to entertaining everyone else. Don't make it a sucker trick, make it impressive, but make it quick. E.g. Just take her deck, have her pick a card, have her return it to the deck. Show that the deck is properly squared up etc (don't draw attention to it, just leave everyone in no doubt). Put the deck behind your back and instantly produce her card. I mean instantly, deck goes behind back and instantly the other hand emerges with the card. I'll leave the method up to you, not hard to figure out. The trick works with her deck. It's simple, fast (about 10 seconds in total). It is impressive if done right, and nobody looks stupid. If she doesn't like it that's her perogative. But she's probably not going to like whatever you do and at least this way you've only wasted 10 seconds on her, instead of a 5 minute routine. Don't zing. It'll backfire horribly. If it turns into a dirty fight she has a couple of years more practice than you, and she's family. -Rd |

You could always just open your set by vanishing something valuable that belongs to her (watch, wedding ring)
If she heckles you for the rest of the routine, don't bring it back!

Just curious, what did you do and how did it go? We've all offered various theories and pieces of advice, but in the end we could all learn from hearing about the conclusion of the story

"That's bad dear aunt..., you're not supposed to do that: here it's ok but you're taking big risks, you know" Using an earlier post's idea: in advance secretly plant a card with a flap in her deck (the type you get in the Pat Page/Bob Sheets 3 card monte or, even better Gaetan Bloom's Bonneteau Escurial's special card), replacing the card in her deck with the same value by the similar gimmicked card. Now follow Robert M's advice making sure she gets the gimicked card, wins and feels on top of the hill... then seem to notice the thickness of the card and reveal the trickery making kindly and generously the comments above. Everytime after that when you are going to perform, you'll be able to claim that she cannot shuffle because "we all know that you're not really fair with the cards..." Just a pleasant two steps strategy. It always pays to be Yin when somebody's Yang.
