Sorry Rich. I meant MentalCraft not Metal Craft...
I guess I had a MentalMisHap.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

I agree with my buddy Jorey: Rich's Haunted Keys are both a joy to behold and to hold.
His giant key is outstanding--and in limited supply. If Haunted Key effects are your thing I'd get in touch with him soonwer rather than later. |

No problemo OZ...I know you knew.
G....thanks! You are correct. The Giant Haunted Key is special...and limited. At tableside, I tell my backstory as the key is passed around amongst the guests. For me, this is very effective because the guests get to realize just how massive the key is. Then when I make it 'slowly' turn...and softly land at the climax....spontaneous applause is almost guaranteed. All my Haunted keys come with my HK tip sheet pdf., plus a superb idea from Jerome Finley regarding instantly transforming almost any large haunted key into an impromptu pendulum! Happy trails. I have a haunted key effect in the MM Halloween issue.
It has a bit of a "twist" at the end. Never really got any feedback from it, now that I'm on here finally, any feedback from anyone who has read it would be greatly welcome.

Thanks everyone, sorry it took so long for me to get back, but I appriciate the guidance! I will check out the links and go antiquing this week. I am rather new to the effect as I had to learn the error of my ways for passing it off as a simple parlor trick after seeing Docc Hilford and Richard Osterlind's work on it!

Though it is much too late for this discussion, I have a book of routines for the haunted key.
Titled WHAT LIES BEHIBD THE DOORS ,it is published by Leaping Lizards. Much information on the key and hand positions. For the storrytellrs this is a treasure trove of powerful material. In the Craft! |

Indeed Ed's work is a worthy addition to any performers library, it is well written, well thought out and usable

Past issues of the Linking RIng had columns written by Mr. Solomon which explained various holds or balances from which the key woyld turn. Excellent information. Kotah |

Being he is humble beyond words, I will throw this out there, Buy any book Ed puts out (you will not be disappointed) he puts his heart, soul and life experience into all he writes
even if you come across a routine that is not you, the tale will take you on a journey that will rival a modern day movie

Don't burn me, but is there really a huge difference in the movement between a designed key (mental-craft is the only seller I'm aware) and a "real old key"?

It seems that the Mental-craft key is a "big" key I personally have never tried one that size (it might be cool if your story line can justify it) if not and you want an "aged" regular size key you can get one from Carlyle his info is (www.carlyletouch.com/mental_key.html)

Thanks for your answer, but I mean, the "trick" is really improved with such a designed key, compared with the key of your garden?

I carry both. A precision key (aged or otherwise) is what I use when I want it to move in somebody else's hands. The other keys all move very well in my hand. The largest key is the easiest for me to control in terms of making it stop. The smallest key balances best on the fingertips of a vertical hand a la the method described in THE PHOENIX.
I often misplace and/or give away my precision keys, so I do have an element in my storyline that explains why this particular key is still shiny while the others are oxidized. I can't afford to give away aged precision keys. Chris |

Chris,
you could always self age some of the shiny ones (that way you don't run out) Michaels/Ac Moores are carrying lots of patina faux finish items now, along with a plethora of Tim Holtz tools and items that spark all kinds of ideas

I don't know if anybody else posted this ... but you don't have to buy the Haunted Key effect from a magic shop. Just go on eBay and buy a low-cost LOT of very ornate old Victorian keys. In my expericnce. about half of them will work for the Haunted Key effect, and will look much cooler than the ones from a magic dealer.
For example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Vtg-old-......f3e8e94d or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Vtg-old-......c0c44bcd Davilance |

That is exactly how I did it Davilance. Gave me the chance to pick out a really nice brass key for a great price. Took the lacquer coating off, wrapped it in a paper towel soaked in a vinegar and salt solution and let it sit for a couple of hours in a sealed plastic bag. Nice patina with greens and browns.
My story is it is one of the keys Santa used over the years to leave the presents when there was no chimneys and fireplaces. The poor key was turned so many times, it now does it unconsciously. Pete

I have many old antique keys as well as Viking's Haunted Key. Viking's key seems to have a better balance to it which makes it easier to use.
